Match Report: West Ham United 0-4 Manchester United

Darron Gibson scores

It was a battle between two injury ravaged United’s at Upton Park as both sides’ concerns grew with more names to add to the wounded list, but in terms of the football, there was only one team in it – four goals, each beautifully constructed in their own way, scored by Manchester United.

There were the expected changes after the Carling Cup win over Spurs but Darron Gibson clearly did enough to keep his place in the team – however, the opening exchanges hinted that West Ham would give United a run for their money. Giggs misplaced a pass that Hines collected – his cross shot across the face of goal was almost converted by Collison who was snuffed out by the backtracking Giggs – this early chance was really the closest the Hammers came to notching a goal in the first half.

Clashes betweeen the United’s of Manchester and West Ham have a reputation for being feisty – whether it was ill blood from the Ince sale or the fact that the East Londoners have more than once thrown spanners in the works of various trophy pushes. Stretford-End.com looks back at 5 of the most memorable (in our opinion) Premier League encounters at Upton Park.

Lampard and Terry

Composed, disciplined and in control – in this clash between Champions and league leaders Manchester United did everything that was asked of them but for the second “Grand Slam” game in a row, were cruelly robbed of at least a probable draw after poor officiating.

Dimitar Berbatov

Strikes from Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney settled this game against Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers who put up a stubborn and resolute defensive performance against United.

Torres and O'Shea battle for the ball

Fernando Torres and David N’Gog scored the goals to grant under pressure Rafa Benitez a reprieve as Liverpool comfortably, and deservedly, beat the Champions Manchester United.

As is often the case in games of such magnitude the first half was somewhat of an anti climax with chances at a premium, though admittedly Liverpool had the better of the opening exchanges.

Match Report: Manchester United 2-1 Bolton Wanderers

Zat Knight Own Goal

The two sides of Manchester United were on show as Bolton Wanderers threatened to overcome a two goal deficit to snatch a point – but in the end Antonio Valencia’s first goal for the club proved to be the goal that put United to the top of the table.

Sir Alex Ferguson made a host of changes, some voluntary and some forced by circumstance – while Edwin van der Sar made a welcome return for his first league start of the season, Gary Neville, Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs and Anderson were restored to the line up while Michael Owen and Jonathan Evans started in place of the injured Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney – Dimitar Berbatov also was selected when the birth of his daughter in the midweek had threatened to render the Bulgarian unavailable.

Football365 and the Mirror must stop Fergie witch-hunt. Now.

Fergie

..just as it says on the tin, really.

Sir Alex has come in for criticsm for voicing his opinion about the physical condition of Alan Wiley. Clearly an attempt to deflect the heat from his side following a poor display but the media backlash which is trying to get Fergie charged with all sorts is bordering on the rabid.

A “journalist” for Football365, Sarah Winterburn, opines that Fergie’s comments were worthy of comparison to Adebayor’s recent antics against Arsenal. He should be fast-tracked to punishment. He should not allowed to explain those comments. Really? Were the comments really that bad? Let’s examine them.

Fixture List Manipulation and FA inconsistencies

Munich Memorial

On my way back from the capital earlier this week the long train journey afforded me an indulgence I don’t take too often, that being the reading of the good old fashioned printed word. Of course I keep upto date with all things football but that generally is done either online or via Sky Sports News.

There was an interesting piece in the Telegraph by Henry Winter that was invitingly titled “Premier League missed a trick with Manchester United centenary fixture “. The article is essentially referring to the 100th anniversary of United playing at Old Trafford which is due to be celebrated on the 19th February 2010.

Tevez has his head in the clouds dreaming of a rosy return

Carlos Tevez

Sadly the image of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez battling for the same ball looks a remote possibility for the weekends derby clash at Old Trafford.

Regardless, as part of the City squad, the Argentinian is expected to rock up at the Theatre of Dreams in some capacity and Tevez has stated in today’s Telegraph, “I expect to have a good reception.. While at United, I always gave my best and I had good relations with the fans. ”
