Bruno Fernandes Named Manchester United Player of the Year

Despite facing heavy criticism throughout the season, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has won the prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the third time. Fernandes, who has been a pivotal figure for Erik ten Hag’s side, played through numerous knocks and minor injuries, proving his resilience and commitment. His influence on the team has been undeniable, particularly in the latter stages of the campaign when he earned widespread praise.

The Portuguese midfielder was twice named United’s Player of the Month, securing the accolades in both August and April. Fans cast their votes on ManUtd.com, with Fernandes receiving 40% of the total. His closest competition came from compatriot Diogo Dalot, who impressed many with his remarkable improvement over the season. Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho rounded out the top four in the voting.

While this season may not have been Fernandes’ finest at Old Trafford, his contribution remains significant. As United’s joint-top Premier League scorer, he will have one more opportunity to end the season on a high as he leads his team in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. With 15 goals across all competitions, Fernandes trails only Rasmus Højlund, who has 16, and he will be aiming to add to his tally on Saturday. After the final, Fernandes will shift his focus to representing Portugal at Euro 2024 this summer.

Chelsea Pursuing United-Linked Kieran McKenna

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s future remains uncertain as speculation mounts about his possible departure following the FA Cup final. While no official comment has come from INEOS regarding Ten Hag’s position, there is growing doubt that he will continue to lead the club under the new ownership structure.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already initiated sweeping changes within the club, with new executives set to take up their roles this summer. On the managerial front, several candidates are being discussed in case Ten Hag is relieved of his duties. Among the names mentioned in the press are Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, and Mauricio Pochettino. Interestingly, Pochettino has emerged as a potential candidate after his recent departure from Chelsea.

Adding to the intrigue, Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has caught the attention of both Chelsea and Manchester United. McKenna’s exceptional work in guiding Ipswich to Premier League promotion has made him a sought-after figure among top clubs. According to Football Insider, Chelsea have already initiated discussions with McKenna’s representatives, as he fits their managerial profile. Ipswich, meanwhile, are keen to retain him as they prepare for life in the top flight.

Manchester United, who first expressed interest in McKenna back in April, are also said to be considering a formal approach. McKenna, a former coach at Old Trafford, has three years left on his contract with Ipswich, meaning any move for the promising manager would require negotiations with his current club. As the summer approaches, it remains to be seen whether McKenna will remain with Ipswich or make a high-profile return to the Premier League with one of England’s elite.
