Danny Welbeck’s future at Manchester United has come into question recently following some stunning performances while on loan at Sunderland. With attacking talent in abundance at Old Trafford, Welbeck was sent on loan this season to gain valuable first team experience at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has now made public his intentions to sign Welbeck on a permanent deal; a move the young striker has refused to rule out.
The England U-21 got off to an indifferent start on loan being used primarily on the wings, but has begun to flourish in recent weeks as striker. Welbeck scored the final goal in Sunderland’s 3-0 victory at Chelsea and then bagged a brace in the 2-2 draw against Everton. His performances have warranted attention and now Bruce is hoping to strike a deal for the promising striker.
Welbeck admits his future is unclear at the moment, refusing to rule out a permanent deal at the Stadium of Light. Should he continue performing at this level his value may rise consequently pricing Sunderland out of a deal.
That’s assuming that United would even be interested in selling. A wind of change may be taking place with United’s attacking talent. Michael Owen’s contract expires at the end of this season and there have been few indications that he will be offered an extension. Speculation has also developed surrounding Dimitar Berbatov’s future. Recent reports suggest he may be on the way to Juventus, but his agent has quickly put that rumour to bed. Assuming Owen leaves, Welbeck may very well take his place in the pecking order. However, Mame Biram Diouf should also be returning at the end of the season from his loan with Blackburn. Simply put, six strikers is too many.
With so much attacking talent on the books it’s difficult to determine which will remain and which will go. Welbeck’s starting to show us that he deserves a place in the squad. Of course, it’s impossible to make a definite conclusion after two matches, but the signs are promising. With the overcrowding of strikers at Old Trafford, there is the chance that Steve Bruce just may get his man. It certainly wouldn’t be the first promising youngster we’ve seen leave the club. However, should Welbeck continue this fine run of performances I think a return to Old Trafford beckons.

I’d probably guess at Welbeck going to Sunderland next year based purely on how things are just now.
As you say though, there’s probably going to be at least some change in the summer. I can’t imagine Welbeck’d want to go back to being a Carling Cup guy, though.
I agree with Ian, he won’t be staying unless he can get guaranteed a regular place in league and champions league places. I don’t think Owen will stay. I do however believe that if Welbeck keeps his performances up, there is much more chance that he comes back and Diouf doesn’t. I hope he comes back and has a good future at United.
I hope he comes back, i would swap him for berbatov and macheda any day of the week. he was class for the academy and the reserves and just needs a good run in the first team. The talent is there no doubt and the temperament seems to be too!
I think it depends on how interested Fergie is in Jordan Henderson. Sunderland fans will believe Jordan is more valuable than Danny, but United fans and Sir Alex certainly won’t see it that way. If a deal is to be reached, it would have to be a straight swap. I can see this happening because we need Midfielders, while John Cofie and Will Keane will feed our striking sectet for years to come
Welbeck could well be one of our main three strikers next season. Rooney: Of course our best front man when fit and in shape. Hernandez: A star in the making. Welbeck: Has a fantastic chance to gather experience and learn now. Macheda: Solid player that needs the games Welbeck are getting. Berbatov: Very frustrating, a genius at best, though mostly out of sync with the rest of the team. Doesnt lift the team, ever. Owen: Get lost.
Iam a sunderland fan and welbeck has played well in last few matches but very average in others apart from man city in 2nd half when he came on. I just think he needs games so hel probs be on loan for a couple of seasons. Soon as frazier cambell comes back welbeck wont start who i think is better. Jordan hendersons all hype you can have him
Most of the games jordan henderson has been in have passed him by..overhyped.. not enough shots and his crosses are awful..you can have him…just an average player
Okay, Bebe on loan, Welbeck in the fold. Owen out. Macheda on loan. Diouf, stay on loan. Welbeck is a much better talent than Bebe and they are similar in size. Bebe is raw, but this year at Sunderland has taught Welbeck how to finish, something United need. If Berbatov goes, Welbeck should come home for sure.
