Lindelöf Set for Contract Extension Amid Defensive Woes
Erik ten Hag has faced a challenging start to the season with his centre-back options severely limited due to injuries. Several key players in that position have struggled to stay fit, leaving Manchester United short of defensive depth. Lisandro Martínez, one of United’s standout performers last season, has aggravated the same injury that cut his debut campaign short and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period. Meanwhile, Raphael Varane continues to deal with minor injuries, and Harry Maguire has also been unavailable at times due to fitness issues. To bolster their defensive ranks, United re-signed Jonny Evans in the summer. However, it is Victor Lindelöf who has primarily stepped up to fill the void, becoming a regular in Ten Hag’s starting XI. The Swedish international has handled the pressure well, and now reports suggest United are planning to trigger the option to extend his contract by an additional year. This would prevent Lindelöf from leaving on a free transfer next summer when his current deal expires.
Lindelöf, who signed a five-year contract in 2019 after joining from Benfica, could see his stay at Old Trafford extended to eight years if the option is activated. Despite this, there is still speculation about his long-term future, with clubs like Juventus and AC Milan rumoured to be interested in signing him either in January or next summer.
Juventus Eye Loan Move for Sancho
With Jadon Sancho currently out of favour at Manchester United, transfer speculation surrounding his future is gaining momentum. Following his exclusion from first-team duties, Juventus are reportedly keen to take the English winger on loan in January. According to reports from The Sun, Juventus are considering an initial loan deal with the option to sign Sancho permanently at the end of the season. However, they are hopeful United would agree to cover half of his wages during the loan spell, which could be a sticking point in negotiations. Sancho has been frozen out by Erik ten Hag after a public dispute with the manager, sparked by his exclusion from the squad for United’s trip to Arsenal in September. When Ten Hag cited poor training performance as the reason, Sancho responded by releasing a statement on social media, calling the manager’s claims untrue. Although the post was later deleted, the damage was done, and Sancho has since been ordered to train away from the first team.
There is little indication that Sancho will be reintegrated into Ten Hag’s plans, and it seems increasingly likely that his future lies away from Old Trafford. A return to Borussia Dortmund has also been mooted, though The Sun reports that Sancho is not enthusiastic about returning to his former club. Like Juventus, Dortmund are unlikely to make a permanent offer in January, and they would also expect United to shoulder a significant portion of Sancho’s wages if a loan deal were to be agreed. As such, United may need to brace themselves for another financial loss if they are to offload the winger in the upcoming transfer window.
