Team News

Burnley will be without striker Lyle Foster for the next three domestic matches, starting with this weekend’s clash against Manchester United, following his straight red card against Nottingham Forest. The forward, who assisted Zeki Amdouni’s opener in that match, will also miss the upcoming fixtures against Salford City and Newcastle United. Manager Vincent Kompany is also missing several key players through injury. Michael Obafemi (hamstring), Hjalmar Ekdal (knee), and Darko Churlinov (blood poisoning) remain sidelined, while Vitinho is being monitored due to a knee issue. However, Jordan Beyer is expected to be fit after suffering from cramp in his previous outing. In Foster’s absence, Jay Rodriguez is the likely candidate to lead the line, though Kompany has several attacking options, including Aaron Ramsey, Mike Tresor, Anass Zaroury, and Benson Manuel, all of whom could feature in the final third.

For Manchester United, manager Erik ten Hag can take some solace from the fact that there were no new injury concerns following their 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek. However, the Red Devils still have a long list of absentees. Raphael Varane and Mason Mount returned to team training earlier in the week, but Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo remain restricted to individual sessions. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw (muscle), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), and Amad Diallo (knee) are all still unavailable. Antony and Jadon Sancho are also out of contention due to personal issues. Harry Maguire missed the Munich trip due to a minor muscle problem but has since returned to training, along with Amrabat, Mount, and Varane, all of whom could help ease United’s current selection difficulties.

Form Guide

Manchester United’s struggles continued on Wednesday night as they fell to a 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, marking their third successive loss in all competitions. Despite goals from Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund, the Red Devils could not claw back the deficit, as Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Harry Kane all found the net for the German champions. Casemiro’s brace and Hojlund’s first goal for the club provided glimmers of hope, but defensive lapses once again plagued Erik ten Hag’s side. A late header from Casemiro came too late to inspire a comeback, as United’s backline capitulated under pressure once more. The defeat followed back-to-back 3-1 losses to Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, adding to their mounting woes.

With concerns off the pitch also casting a shadow over the club, United’s on-field performances have offered little respite. Ten Hag, reportedly facing unrest within the squad, has urged his players to reflect on their individual performances, particularly after another lacklustre defensive showing in Munich. Despite their poor form, United can take some confidence from their recent record against Burnley, having gone unbeaten in their last five meetings with the Clarets. However, they travel to Turf Moor without a single point from their away fixtures this season, having lost four of their last five Premier League matches on the road.

Predicted Outcome

Burnley might feel they are catching Manchester United at the right time, given the Red Devils’ current struggles with injuries, defensive frailties, and off-field distractions. Nevertheless, despite their woes, United’s quality should be enough to secure a 2-0 victory at Turf Moor, as Ten Hag’s side look to steady the ship.
