With United claiming their first piece of silverware of the year yesterday, the press believes Sir Alex is still looking to improve his squad with – you guessed it – Mesut Ozil. Meanwhile, Wes Brown has called time on his England career, Chicharito gave United fans the perfect hello, and Berbatov impressed at Wembley.

United grab first prize and eye Mesut Ozil – The Guardian

It’s the rumor that refuses to die this summer, and as the transfer window draws to a close it’s only getting worse. On Saturday, Sir Alex was spotted at the Werder Bremen vs Fulham friendly, which only helped fuel the rumors. Following United’s Community Shield success, Sir Alex was asked about his interest in Ozil, but he failed to quiet the rumors. Fergie attempted to dodge the question be saying a lot of clubs were interested in Ozil, but when pushed to answer if United would bid for Ozil, Sir Alex simply responded “I didn’t say that.” Obviously he didn’t say he was planning to bid for German playmaker, but he also didn’t deny it. If Sir Alex wanted to sign Ozil, would he really admit to it in an interview? He wouldn’t give away any of his plans to our rivals. Or maybe he’s truly just not interested. He also spoke of his happiness with the current squad; but would the addition of Ozil make him even happier? While there are multiple ways to infer his quotes today, one thing is certain – we are no closer to the conclusion of this transfer saga.

Chicharito gives United fans perfect hello – The Daily Mail

Hopefully by now you’ve had the chance to see Chicharito’s first goal in English football. In case you missed it, the ball came off his foot from four feet and bounced off of his face into the back of the net. While hardly the greatest goal ever taken, it does reinforce the belief that Chicharito has some sort of sixth sense for finding the back of the net. Even when he miskicks he manages to score.

Wes Brown retires from international football – The Daily Mail

After being recalled to the England squad for Wednesday’s friendly, Wes Brown has announced his retirement from international football. As both Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have done in the past, Brown will now turn his full attention to his career at United. He said it was his time to step aside as a new wave of young talent was set to emerge. Personally, I think this is great news; always nice knowing that a player no longer has the distraction of international football.

It’s blast-off for Berbatov – The Sun

This one gets included solely because it contains one of the most ridiculous sentences I’ve ever read: “Dimitar Berbatov – the man with the Count Dracula haircut – is back from the dead.” Really? That’s the creative line The Sun came up with? Stupid comments aside, Berbatov scored a spectacular goal against Chelsea. He can be frustrating at times, but he certainly shows moments of footballing genius.

Fun Fact: All credit goes to Yolkie for this one. Ryan Giggs has won 33 honors in 839 appearances, meaning he averages a piece of silverware every 25 matches. Only Chicharito and Chris Smalling have better records in the squad with one trophy in one appearance.

  1. I don’t really understand why Brown’s chucking internationals to be honest. When he was fit Capello clearly thought he was a good choice at right back and Brown, rightly or wrongly, had a shot at winning the spot from Johnson I reckon, and of course he’d have had chances in the middle with injuries and the like.

Not complaining, though. I’ve never personally been particularly impressed with Brown for England, though it’s not for lack of effort.

  2. I read on twitter and forgive me for not providing a source, but having won the Community Shield, Ryan Giggs has become the most successful player in European football history. Not sure if that is from culmative trophies won or on a game per trophy basis

  3. I believe that comes from cumulative trophies, though he may be the most successful based on trophies-to-game ratio as well. I think that took him to 59 honors and the previous record was 58. I read that as well.

  4. I think the 59/58 was Utd/Liverpool (haven’t checked that though).

Giggs is on 33 and Maldini had 26. Unsure if any other players have more, I just picked the most prominent in my own mind.
