Eintracht Frankfurt Opt Not to Retain Van de Beek
Manchester United supporters may have thought Donny van de Beek’s time at the club was finally over, but the Dutch international looks set to return to Old Trafford this summer. The 26-year-old midfielder, who moved to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan in January, had hoped for a fresh start in the Bundesliga. His loan deal included an option-to-buy clause that would have allowed the German club to make the transfer permanent for a fee of £9.5 million, plus an additional £2.6 million in performance-related add-ons. However, according to well-known Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Frankfurt have no intention of triggering that clause. Romano took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to confirm the decision, saying that Donny van de Beek will return to Man United in June. The option to buy clause added into his loan deal will not be triggered by Eintracht Frankfurt. Dutch midfielder expected to look for new chapter, new club in the summer transfer window.
Van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2020 in a high-profile £40 million transfer, but he has never managed to establish himself as a first-team regular. Despite showing early promise, he struggled for playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and even Erik ten Hag, the manager who had worked with him at Ajax. His return to United will likely be short-lived, as the club is expected to seek a permanent move for him elsewhere in the upcoming transfer window. While Van de Beek’s future at United appears bleak, both the player and the club will be hoping for a swift resolution to his situation. A fresh start at a new club could be the best outcome for all parties involved, as Van de Beek looks to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most highly-rated midfielders during his time at Ajax.
Olise Favouring United Over Liverpool
In other transfer news, Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is reportedly leaning towards a move to Manchester United over Liverpool, should both Premier League giants battle for his signature this summer. According to a report by ESPN, the talented Frenchman has prioritised a switch to Old Trafford as he contemplates his next step. Olise has been a standout performer for Palace in recent seasons, and his form has not gone unnoticed by some of England’s biggest clubs. Chelsea came close to signing the winger in the summer of 2023, after triggering his then-£35 million release clause, but Palace managed to hold onto their prized asset by tying him down to a new four-year deal. It is now believed that his updated contract includes a significantly higher release clause, with speculation suggesting it could be in the region of £60 million. While Crystal Palace will be reluctant to lose one of their most creative players, the potential sale of Olise could give manager Oliver Glasner the funds needed to strengthen other areas of the squad. For United, a move for the 22-year-old would be part of a broader strategy to revamp their attacking options. Antony, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 for a staggering £86 million, has failed to live up to expectations in his two years at the club. Reports suggest that United may be open to offloading the Brazilian to make room for Olise, who is seen as a more proven option in the Premier League. If United can secure his signature, it would represent a major coup in their efforts to challenge for silverware next season.
