Mainoo Considering International Future
Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly weighing up his options regarding his international future, with the Manchester United youngster yet to commit to either England or Ghana at senior level. According to the Daily Mail, the midfielder is awaiting assurances about his prospects for senior caps before making a decision. Mainoo, who has represented England at under-17, under-18, and under-19 levels, is also eligible to play for Ghana through his parental heritage. His remarkable rise at Old Trafford has sparked speculation that a senior call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad may be imminent. Despite his impressive form, particularly compared to midfielders like Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson, Southgate has been hesitant to move away from his established players.
With Euro 2024 on the horizon, the Mail suggests that Mainoo might not get a chance to feature for England competitively until autumn. Meanwhile, the Ghanaian FA is reportedly making efforts to convince the 18-year-old to switch allegiances to the Black Stars. Interest from Southgate continues to grow, but Mainoo appears focused on his club career for now. He made his 10th consecutive Premier League start for Manchester United in their recent win against Aston Villa, with Southgate watching from the stands.
United Urged to Pursue Juventus’ Bremer
Manchester United have been encouraged to target Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer in the upcoming summer transfer window. Amid injury struggles this season, it is understood that Erik ten Hag is prioritising the acquisition of a new central defender to strengthen his squad. Lisandro Martinez has been hampered by fitness issues throughout the campaign, spending two separate spells on the sidelines. Although Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire have formed a partnership in his absence, United are in need of a younger, more athletic defender to bolster their ranks. Bremer, who has excelled at Juventus, is seen as an ideal fit for the Red Devils. Speaking to TuttoJuve, Bremer’s former Torino manager Moreno Longo emphasised the defender’s qualities. “He has overwhelming physicality, defends confidently in open spaces, and plays dominant football,” Longo said. He also recounted how Bremer seized his opportunity at Torino, moving from the fringes to become a key player under his leadership.
The Brazilian has featured in 24 Serie A games this season, boasting an impressive 88% passing accuracy. Bremer’s ability to read the game and his physical presence have made him a standout performer in Italy, and Longo believes he would be a valuable asset for United. Other defenders linked with a move to Old Trafford include Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Leny Yoro of Lille, and Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini.
