We are into the new year and we all know what that means. The January transfer window has kicked off and the rumour mill is on for all the possible transfers that await us. While we wait to see what kind of moves Manchester United could make this month, if they make any, we are going to be focusing on the players that could come in handy this coming summer. With the start of the year, all of the players which have their contracts set to run out in the summer of 2024 could now negotiate with other clubs about their potential moves in six months.

That is why we are looking at four players United could find interesting if they are to sign them on a free transfer. With the club spending so much in recent seasons and probably planning to spend some more on transfers, these players could also be of interest to save some money, but bring in certain options. While the list of players ending their contracts in the summer is led by Kylian Mbappe, all the other realistic options are not as thrilling as in some of the previous years.

Adrien Rabiot

Manchester United could do with some new experience in midfield and Adrien Rabiot could bring it. The Frenchman will turn 29 in April and is set to run his contract with Juventus down. So far this season, he made 16 appearances, with three goals and three assists. He is a player that is known for some off-the-pitch storylines, but would improve options, especially with the limits on Scott McTominay’s abilities and Casemiro’s stark decline this season. Also, let’s not forget also close to turning 32, so United have to keep an open mind.

Mario Hermoso

When there is a centre-back on the market, who has been playing under Diego Simeone for years, then you have to explore that option. Mario Hermoso will also turn 29 next year and has years of experience playing in La Liga and the Champions League. United’s turnover players at centre-back has been big in recent seasons, but adding new options in Hermoso seems a much shrewder option than surprisingly signing Jonny Evans.

Eric Dier

Another defender/defensive midfielder Manchester United could think about is Eric Dier. The Tottenham man lost his place in Ange Postecoglou’s team and has made just four appearances this season. Last year, he was still a regular starter and while he has his weaknesses, he is an Englishman who could be a good person to have to fight for his place in the squad. Dier’s technical abilities could also be of interest to Ten Hag, and getting Dier on a free could free up some time and money to focus on some other signings as well. He might not be the obvious choice, but as a backup option and a domestic player for competition quotas, Dier should be an option to at least explore.
