Manchester United are doing everything they can to improve the squad ahead of next season. The return to the UEFA Champions League means the club needs reinforcements to mount a title challenge.
So far only Victor Lindelöf joined the side, and there is no question his arrival will bolster the defensive line. But United are far from over when it comes to signing new players. Anderson Talisca, Felipe Anderson, Marco Verratti, and Alvaro Morata have emerged as potential transfer targets. But this Wednesday we learned United are keeping a close eye on one of the top strikers in the world.
According to several sources, Manchester United wants to land Robert Lewandowski during the summer. The Bayern Munich star became frustrated with the club last season, and would be interested to play elsewhere. Both The Red Devils and Chelsea appear as potential destinations for his arrival at the moment. And while The Blues have a slight edge according to papers, there is no question he would fit better at United.
Why United and Not Chelsea?
Before you start thinking something like “he is a top player and would fit anywhere”, let’s analyse something. Lewandowski thrives when he’s the focal point of the attack. And would he be that kind of player in Chelsea? The Blues have Eden Hazard, Pedro, and Willian as attacking options. Lewandowski would fill the void left by the departure of Diego Costa, but he won’t be the best player on the side. The flow of the game would still go through Hazard, leaving Lewandowski as a potential complementary option to the Belgian winger.
Meanwhile, the Polish star would immediately become United’s top attacking target. Knowing that Mourinho only plays with one striker, Lewandowski would obviously grab that role. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial would have to settle to a wing role, but that’s not all. Lewandowski’s presence would end all talks regarding a potential arrival of Morata who, even though is a good player, is not on the same level as Lewandowski.
Substantial Upgrade To The Side
Lewandowski would also be a substantial upgrade for the club. Paul Pogba is the team’s biggest star, but “Lewa” would certainly battle him for that role. But egos aside, the Polish forward would give Manchester United some much-needed credibility. If they manage to sign him, they would automatically become title contenders. And they would also show their rivals they are serious in their intentions to return to glory.
If that is not enough, let’s consider the following: United’s best moments last season came when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was at his best. And even though the Swede will be missed, Lewandowski would be his perfect replacement. He would inspire fear on opposing defences. And it would give the squad a legit scoring threat in his prime. We haven’t had that kind of player since Wayne Rooney a few years ago.
It only takes a quick look at the numbers to see how effective Lewandowski has been since joining Bayern Munich. He scored 43 goals and added 10 assists in 47 matches across all competitions this past season. And he has 110 goals and 30 assists in 147 matches since arriving at Allianz Arena. He’s THAT good.
How Much Would Lewandowski Cost?
This seems rather obvious, but let’s point it out either way: Lewandowski is not going to be a cheap transfer. Transfermarkt has him valued at €80 million. And if we consider Paul Pogba cost over €100M, Lewandowski would top that number easily. He could easily become one of the most expensive players in the world.
In the end, Manchester United will battle with Chelsea for Lewa’s arrival. And that would happen only if Bayern Munich decide to let him go. There are several hurdles to avoid if United wants to land Lewandowski at Old Trafford. But numbers aside, there is no doubt he would be a stellar signing for The Red Devils, both on and off the pitch.
