Manchester United legend and former club captain Eric Cantona believes that this is only “the beginning” of the Jose Mourinho reign at Old Trafford as the Portuguese prepares his side for the trip to Anfield on Monday night. Cantona played under Alex Ferguson for four and a half seasons and is generally considered the catalyst in helping United win the title in 1993 after a 26 year wait. The Frenchman scored some iconic goals in his debut season, including a powerful header away at Manchester City and would be crucial in Ferguson’s three championships and two FA Cup victories.
Jose Mourinho has had a mixed start to his Manchester United career having spent big in the summer on bringing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. United have beaten the likes of Bournemouth, Southampton and champions Leicester City – but have fallen short against Manchester City and Watford. The football has been much better compared to the slow and pedestrian stuff enforced by former manager Louis van Gaal – whilst Cantona still believes United can win the title in the Portuguese’s first season at the helm, but stressed how difficult this will be – with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City:
“It’s just the beginning. Manchester can still be champions. Jose Mourinho is a successful manager at a successful club which this year has successful players. But this is an extremely difficult championship, full of great teams and great managers like Pep Guardiola,”
