Manchester United Eye Move for Jobe Bellingham
Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of offering Jobe Bellingham an escape from his struggles at Borussia Dortmund when the transfer window reopens in January. After acknowledging that a new midfielder was unattainable in the final weeks of the summer, United decided to delay their plans until later in the season. Now, with pressure mounting to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad, INEOS are expected to pursue a mid-season addition, similar to last year’s £25 million signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.
United’s shortlist features several promising names, including Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, both regarded among Europe’s most talented young midfielders. However, their current clubs, Crystal Palace and Brighton, have no intention of sanctioning a sale mid-season, which has led United to focus their attention elsewhere. According to TalkSPORT, Bellingham has emerged as a ‘potential option’, though securing his signature in January would be complicated.
The 20-year-old’s situation in Germany may play into United’s hands. He has not started a Bundesliga match since August, and his most significant appearance since then came as a 25-minute substitute against Heidenheim. During his debut on the opening day at St. Pauli, he was replaced at half-time by Felix Nmecha, prompting his father to confront Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, after the match. The club subsequently reminded players that dressing rooms are strictly off-limits to non-staff members. Having started 39 of Sunderland’s 40 league matches last season, Bellingham is unaccustomed to a secondary role, which could make a Premier League return an attractive prospect should United come calling.
United Prioritising Wharton Over Baleba
Manchester United have reportedly placed Adam Wharton ahead of Carlos Baleba on their midfield shortlist. The club had previously considered the Brighton midfielder, but a £100 million valuation swiftly ended discussions in the summer. While United initially intended to revisit the pursuit in 2026, The i Paper reports that plans have since shifted following Baleba’s inconsistent start to the season. Concerns within Carrington over his performances have prompted the club to redirect their focus towards Wharton, whose composed style and vision have impressed Amorim.
The Crystal Palace midfielder is now regarded as United’s top target to reinforce their midfield. Although a January deal remains unlikely, the club are expected to make a serious approach next summer. Wharton has drawn comparisons to former United stalwart Michael Carrick, while Declan Rice has publicly praised his ‘outstanding’ abilities.
Reports suggest Palace have a gentleman’s agreement allowing Wharton to leave in the summer of 2026 for a suitable offer. Even so, his valuation is expected to be substantial given his growing influence at Selhurst Park. While Wharton fits United’s long-term vision, the side also lack a true defensive presence in midfield. With Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte delivering mixed performances, supporters will hope for a complete midfield rebuild next summer, mirroring the overhaul seen in the attacking department earlier this year.
