United Eye Upamecano Free Transfer Opportunity

Manchester United are reportedly among several clubs closely monitoring Dayot Upamecano’s contract situation at Bayern Munich, with hopes of securing him on a free transfer next summer. After a summer of heavy spending, INEOS view the potential arrival of an experienced defender without a transfer fee as an ideal piece of business.

Upamecano’s future in Bavaria remains uncertain, as his current deal expires at the end of the season. Bayern are eager to extend his stay, but negotiations have reached a stalemate due to disagreements over a signing bonus. The French international is seeking a lucrative package that reflects his performances and loyalty, mirroring the deal recently awarded to Alphonso Davies, who reportedly received a signing-on fee of around £17.4m to £19.1m.

With Bayern under pressure to reduce their wage bill by 20%, the club are struggling to meet Upamecano’s demands. As reported by German journalist Christian Falk, the gap between the two parties’ expectations remains “very, very big.” The 26-year-old, meanwhile, continues to play a vital role under Vincent Kompany, starting five of Bayern’s six Bundesliga matches and both of their opening Champions League fixtures this term. From January, he will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs, and the likes of Real Madrid, PSG, Liverpool, and United are all believed to be watching closely.

Whether United genuinely need another centre-back could depend on internal developments, as Harry Maguire is reportedly in talks over extending his contract. However, the potential of adding a proven defender like Upamecano at no transfer cost is certain to tempt INEOS, who aim to reinforce without overspending.

United Linked With Leipzig’s Lukeba

Manchester United have also been linked with RB Leipzig’s promising defender Castello Lukeba. The 22-year-old Frenchman has been attracting attention across Europe thanks to his consistent displays in the Bundesliga, with Liverpool and Chelsea reportedly joining United in the race for his signature, according to Fichajes.

All three Premier League clubs are said to be considering bids in the region of £52 million. Lukeba has been described as “a real talent with real potential,” and United believe he could strengthen their defensive options. The opportunity to join Old Trafford would represent a major step in his career, giving him the platform to test himself at the highest level.

United have shown a strong track record in developing young talent in recent seasons, which could make them an appealing destination for Lukeba. The French defender’s composure, anticipation, and ability to play out from the back align well with the club’s long-term vision. Despite the sizeable fee, United see him as a worthwhile investment who could form a key part of the team’s rebuild. With competition from Liverpool and Chelsea intensifying, it remains to be seen whether United can move swiftly enough to secure his services. However, landing a player of Lukeba’s calibre could go a long way in restoring the defensive stability the club has been lacking.
