Manchester United head into the second leg of their Europa League semi-final with a commanding 3-0 lead after a clinical first-leg performance at San Mamés. With their season riding on success in Europe, Ruben Amorim’s side delivered when it mattered most—producing one of their most composed and effective displays under the Portuguese head coach.

Having rested key players during the weekend’s Premier League fixture, Amorim’s gamble paid off. Casemiro, back in the starting eleven, opened the scoring with a powerful header, before Bruno Fernandes added two more goals to give United a comfortable cushion by half-time. A red card for Dani Vivian further tilted the tie in the visitors’ favour, and United expertly managed the game to take a huge step towards the final.

Senior Figures Deliver On The Big Stage

Under scrutiny for much of their time at the club, Harry Maguire and Casemiro played pivotal roles in United’s breakthrough. Maguire, recently enjoying a resurgence, turned provider in unexpected fashion. After charging forward down the right, he delivered a high cross that eventually found its way to Casemiro, who headed United into the lead. The Brazilian midfielder has battled questions over his future throughout the campaign, but once again proved his value in a high-stakes situation. He set the tone early, anchoring midfield battles and scoring a vital opener. His leadership and composure were key in keeping United settled throughout a high-pressure first half.

Fernandes Extends Europa League Legacy

Bruno Fernandes continues to redefine excellence in European competition. The United captain, already holding the record for most goal involvements in Europa League knockout history, added two more to his tally in Bilbao. First, he calmly slotted home from the spot, then followed it up with a precise finish to put the visitors 3-0 up before the interval. His latest contribution means he now sits top of the leaderboard for Europa League semi-final involvements, surpassing the likes of Radamel Falcao, Alexandre Lacazette, and Kevin Gameiro. For Amorim, Fernandes remains the dependable engine of this side—particularly on European nights when the stakes are highest.

Another Red Card Turns The Tide

United have seen their share of misfortune in domestic competition this season, from injuries to refereeing decisions. Yet in Europe, fortune has favoured them. Dani Vivian’s dismissal in the 35th minute marked the third straight knockout tie where United’s opposition saw red. Real Sociedad’s sending-off proved decisive at 2-2 in the last 16; Lyon were reduced to ten men just before extra time in the quarter-finals. This time, with United already ahead in Bilbao, Athletic were left with a mountain to climb after Vivian’s early exit. It’s the kind of luck that Amorim will be hoping continues, at least for two more matches.

Eyes on Manchester, Then Bilbao

United’s previous complacency nearly cost them against Lyon, so Amorim will be determined not to let this commanding advantage slip. With their defence vulnerable at times this season, discipline and intensity will be essential back at Old Trafford. The finish line is now within reach. If United can hold their nerve and see the job through, their attention can finally turn to a potential title-decider at San Mamés on 21 May.
