Can Pellistri Force His Way Into Ten Hag’s Plans After Copa America?
Facundo Pellistri’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain, but his performances at this summer’s Copa America could play a key role in determining whether he fits into Erik ten Hag’s plans moving forward. The Uruguayan winger has yet to fully establish himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford, often finding opportunities limited. However, Pellistri has thrived in the international setup, where he’s enjoyed much more consistent playing time. Since making his debut for Uruguay in January 2022 under former head coach Diego Alonso, the 21-year-old has been a regular fixture in the squad, continuing to impress on the international stage.
Under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa at this year’s Copa America, Pellistri was handed a significant role in Uruguay’s campaign. He played the full 90 minutes in their opening match against Panama, helping his side to a 3-1 victory. Despite a late consolation goal from Panama’s Michael Murillo, Uruguay’s dominance was clear, with Pellistri playing an integral part in their attacking play.
In Uruguay’s second group-stage fixture, Pellistri stepped up his performance even further, delivering two goal contributions in a 5-0 rout of Bolivia. He opened the scoring with a scrappy header inside the first 10 minutes, marking his first goal at a major international tournament and only his second for his country. His efforts didn’t stop there – Pellistri’s defensive contributions were equally impressive, winning 100% of his tackles and recovering the ball on four occasions. He also created two chances, won four duels, and completed 86% of his passes.
United Set Sights on Zirkzee to Strengthen Attack
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season. The 23-year-old forward had a strong campaign with the Italian side, netting 12 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions. His impressive form has caught the attention of United, who are in need of additional firepower to complement their current attack. Zirkzee offers more than just goalscoring ability. The Dutch forward is known for his creative play, and his versatility would provide a valuable dimension to Manchester United’s frontline. The club is reportedly keen to add depth to their attack, having signed Danish striker Rasmus Højlund last season. While Højlund is expected to be a key figure in the team, bringing in Zirkzee would ease the burden on the young striker and provide competition in the forward positions.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United have already initiated discussions with Zirkzee’s representatives and have been informed that Bologna are willing to sell if his €40 million release clause is triggered. The clause is valid until mid-August, giving Manchester United a limited window to finalise a deal. The reported €40 million asking price is unlikely to be a stumbling block for a club with Manchester United’s resources, and it will be interesting to see how this potential transfer develops in the coming weeks. As United continue their efforts to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours, Zirkzee could be the latest piece in Ten Hag’s evolving puzzle.
