Man United to Adjust Transfer Strategy

Manchester United are reportedly re-evaluating their transfer strategy in response to the Premier League’s new profitability and sustainability regulations. According to the Manchester Evening News, the club may be compelled to offload players they would prefer to retain during the summer transfer window. The challenge of moving players has plagued United for years, primarily due to the high wages of their squad members. This issue will be a key focus for INEOS as they work to revamp the squad. The report indicates that United are now open to offers for most of their current players. Specifically, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, both of whom are out of contract next year, will be available for transfer if acceptable bids are received.

The future of Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay remains uncertain as they approach the final year of their contracts. Although United entertained offers for both players last summer, neither moved on. Both have since contributed positively, despite a challenging season for manager Erik ten Hag. McTominay, in particular, has enjoyed a productive season, scoring ten goals and looking to showcase his abilities further at the European Championships with Scotland.

Fernandes Among Premier League POTM Nominees

Bruno Fernandes has been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month award for April. The Portuguese midfielder, who has faced substantial criticism throughout the season, netted six goals in the Premier League last month. Despite Fernandes’ individual success, United’s performance was underwhelming. The team won only one match, lost the same number, and drew three, ultimately undermining their chances of securing a Champions League spot. Fernandes is competing for the award against five other Premier League players: Cole Palmer of Chelsea, Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace, Kai Havertz of Arsenal, Jordan Pickford of Everton, and Josko Gvardiol of Manchester City.

Fernandes is seeking his fifth Player of the Month accolade since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. His dedication has often been undervalued by pundits this season, making a potential win all the more significant.

Martial Returns to Training

Anthony Martial’s return to full training after a 13-week injury lay-off is a welcome development for Manchester United. However, at 28, Martial’s future at Old Trafford seems uncertain, with ongoing questions about his ability to remain fit and fulfil his potential.

Martial, who has made just 19 appearances this season and scored only two goals, has struggled with injuries throughout his career at United. His absence has led to Erik ten Hag relying heavily on 21-year-old Rasmus Hojlund, who is still adapting to Premier League demands. Martial’s contract expires in the summer, and it remains to be seen where he will be playing next season.

In more positive news, Jonny Evans has also returned to training after a three-week absence. United have been grappling with an injury crisis throughout the season, with Evans having to play more than initially anticipated following his rejoining the club on a Bosman transfer last summer. Recently, Harry Maguire has been United’s sole fit centre-back, with Casemiro being deployed in an unfamiliar role alongside him.
