In today’s Manchester United news David De Gea talks about United interest, Chris Smalling talks about unbeaten run, and Sir Alex Ferguson would like to make Edwin van der Sar a coach.

De Gea makes overtures to United – Daily Mail

David De Gea admits it would be hard to leave Atletico Madrid, but the same can be said for turning down Manchester United. De Gea has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since last month. The rumoured fee for the Spanish keeper is £15 million. It seems likely that Edwin van der Sar will retire this season and Tomasz Kuszczak will leave for first-team football, so De Gea would be an excellent acquisition. Anders Lindegaard has already signed with United, but it would be fantastic to have two promising goalkeepers fighting for Van der Sar’s gloves.

Smalling cools unbeatable talk – Sky Sports

Not exactly the confidence I like to see from players. Chris Smalling does not believe United can remain unbeaten during this Premier League campaign. So far United have not lost a match in the league, but Smalling seems uncertain that it can remain that way this season. The 21-year-old defender acknowledges the Premier League is far more competitive than the era of Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’. I’d like to think all of the players believe we can remain unbeaten, but it is also good to see a young talent remain grounded. I don’t think it would be unthinkable to go unbeaten, but there are still a lot of matches and a lot of work to be done.

Fergie hatching Van plan – The Sun

While United remain busy trying to plan for Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, it is also rumoured the club would like to make him a coach as well. The Sun reports that such a deal would not effect current goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, and Van der Sar would act as more of a scout and ambassador. Van der Sar has been fantastic for the club, and he will certainly be missed when he retires. However, there would be a lot more comfort in if our future goalkeepers could learn from a legend.
