Fergie livid with his United side

Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was livid with his side's performance in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, comparing the defending to that of a conference side.

Ferguson was quoted as saying "You don't expect that from Manchester United. When we have a bad day we usually still get something from the game. Overall, they were the better team today. Liverpool produced a performance of tackling, hassling and getting about us."

United could not have got off to a better start when Carlos Tevez fired in the opening goal after good work from new striker, Dimitar Berbatov. However, a deflected shot resulted in Edwin Van Der Sar smashing the ball against the legs of the defending Wes Brown for an absolute howler of an own goal. Ryan Babel then added to United's misery with a scuffed shot after poor defending from the usually experienced Ryan Giggs.

United had not lost at Anfield since the 3-1 defeat in November 2001 and had not conceeded a goal since November 2003. The manner of defeat will disappoint Ferguson more than anything as United rarely threaten and as the manager said - more is expected from Manchester United.
