Scholes out of action for two months

Paul Scholes

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Paul Scholes, who was superb against Bolton last Saturday having come on as a substitute, will be unavailable for selection after picking up a ligament injury against Aalborg in Denmark.

Scholes was substituted on after 16 minutes after a clumsy tackle. Ryan Giggs came on to replace Scholes - who has featured eight times already this season for the Reds. United went onto win the match 3-0 although the loss of the inspiration midfielder will be a big blow to United's defense of both the European Cup and the Premier League.

Speaking after the 3-0 victory, Sir Alex Ferguson was quoted as saying "He has suffered ligament damage. At this moment in time it's difficult to say exactly how serious (it is), but it looks like the medial ligament, in which case it will be six to eight weeks which is a bit of a blow."

Fergie was a bit more optimistic over Wayne Rooney's fitness, who also had to be withdrawn early in the second half after injuring his ankle. Fergie added: "We are hoping it isn't ligament trouble. He just felt his ankle. I would imagine he would be doubtful for the Blackburn game on Saturday."

As Fergie mentioned, United are away to Blackburn in the tea time kickoff on Saturday, a game United must win against former midfielder Paul Ince, who now manages the Lancashire club. United beat Rover 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 away last season.
