Rooney sending off reaction

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney was sent off for two yellow card offenses today - sparking a fierce reaction from manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"The ball was thrown to where the free-kick was being taken - did it hit the referee? No," Sir Alex was quoted as saying. Fergie then followed up with "Was it thrown in anger? Yes, because he wanted the game hurried up, he threw with pace to get the game going."

United legend and record apperance holder Ryan Giggs also discussed the sending off. "The first one was a booking, Wayne pulled him (Dacourt) back," the Welshman explained. He went on to add "But for the second booking, he just wanted to get the game going again. He threw the ball back to where the free-kick was and the referee’s opinion is that Wayne threw the ball at him. I think Wayne just wanted to keep the game going because we were losing and the free-kicks and bookings were slowing the game down."
