Mourinho starts war of words

Jose Mourinho has stated that he believes Wayne Rooney should not be playing against his Inter Milan side on Tuesday as he should be suspended for his challenge on an Aalborg player in the final group game.

Mourinho's Inter, who beat Bologna 2-1 on Saturday, have the worst record of all the qualifiers for the final 16 in the Champions League - however are confident that they can overcome the current European Champions. Mourinho comments about Rooney came in the online edition of his Telegraph column.

The former Chelsea manager insisted: "Back in 2005 UEFA used TV evidence to suspend Michael Essien for a challenge that he made in the Champions League against Liverpool. Against Aalborg, Rooney made a challenge that deserved punishment. But nothing happens. What is the difference between Michael Essien from Chelsea and Wayne Rooney from Manchester United? I don't think there is a difference."

He then followed up with comments about Nemanja Vidic extending his punishment, who is suspended for the clash: "It is simple. His elbowing in front of such a large audience deserved a two-game suspension. So he should not be playing in either leg. The rules are written."
