Mourinho denies wanting ex Arsenal target Ronaldo

Jose Mourinho has laughed off any rumours that his Inter Milan side are trying to sign European Football of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo - in the same week that Ronaldo admitted he was close to joining Arsenal.

Mourinho has come under a massive amount of criticism for his conduct during the start of the Serie A season - even though his side top the table. His signing of former United target, Ricardo Quaresma, hasn't worked out too well with the Portuguese international looking more like Ronaldo when he first came to the country five years ago. Ronaldo and Mourinho fell out a couple of years ago when the then Chelsea bossed criticised Ronaldo's up brining.

Meanwhile Ronaldo had revealed that he was 'very close' to signing for United's title rivals Arsenal in 2003. Ronaldo added "I came within a whisker of doing it. Wenger is someone I respect a lot. He is very intelligent." Ronaldo was speaking to France Football magazine after his Ballon D'or win this week. His agent also revealed that many top clubs were in for him when he was 18, although it was only United and Arsenal that wanted to buy him that season - the others wanted to loan him back to Sporting.
