Fergie Targets Four Strikers

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he is still in the market for a new striker - but said that even though he hopes to have a new face by the time Manchester United play Newcastle a week on Sunday, it won't be at the expense of Louis Saha.

"We are looking at three or four different options in the striking department which I hope will come to a happy conclusion... Hopefully we will have someone in for the start of the season", said Sir Alex.

"You don't want to give up on people like that (Saha) just because they have had a few injuries.. When he is fit, Louis is an explosive player who will guarantee 20 goals a season," Fergie continued.

"Louis is on a programme at the moment which we feel will get him to 100% fitness."

"It is more about his confidence in doing this programme which will get him back playing all the time. Hopefully that is the case because he is such a fantastic player."

United have been strongly linked with a move for Tottenham forward Dimi Berbatov but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has refused to negotiate his staggering price tag for the Bulgarian, believed to be around £30m.

But with Wayne Rooney struggling for fitness, Manucho out with a broken foot, and Louis Saha, the clubs only real senior striker, facing perennial injury woes, the Red Devils may either be forced to up their offer for Berbatov or look elsewhere - and this could mean a move for Roque Santa Cruz of Blackburn, although Lyon's Karim Benzema seems too pricy, despite being a player Fergie admires.
