Much has been made of Rooney's 'average' season in which we won the double. I think it's all nonsense. As Fergie pointed out the lad plays everywhere and anywhere he is told, which shows he is a team player - unlike Ronaldo.
The amount of space he creates for Ronaldo to bomb into is so important to the side and goal he setup against Middlesbrough was quite stunning.
I think his best position is uptop but with a free role so that he can roam around and continue to create space. He is strong so can hold the ball up and get in behind defences with his pace. I agree with Lippi - Rooney is the perfect forward.

Just a personal opinion here but i would prefer Rooney playing just behind another front man (if Berbatov signs). As regards playing him on the wing i think that's a really big mistake, firstly because it takes him out of the game and secondly because he's not really comfortable there.
Just off the front man, i think Rooney is more effective and he can bring more of the United players into the game. Also, i think that he worries opposing defenders playing in that role.
