Four straight away wins in the league. No goals conceded away from home in five. Juan Mata is looking confident and decisive while scoring and assisting from his preferred position, with Shinji Kagawa increasingly influential from wide areas and enjoying his partnership with Mata*. Antonio Valencia is recapturing some form, and Wayne Rooney (until his recent injury) has been scoring consistently from the #9 position. Away from Old Trafford, it’s beginning to look like Manchester United again.

In Sunday’s big game Man United traveled to White Hart Lane to play Tottenham Hotspur, looking to avenge their 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Wintry conditions threatened to postpone the match, but after a late pitch inspection the teams were given the all-clear. Spurs lined up as expected with Defoe and Parker replacing Adebayor (international duty) and Sandro (injured). United made only one change to the team that beat Liverpool last Sunday, but altered their team shape and tactics significantly. As always, we’d love to hear the debate from both sets of fans.

After a double-header against Chelsea, United faced another London-based side as Arsenal came to Old Trafford. It’s early in the season but Arsenal are already off the pace set by United, Chelsea and City – a defeat would only reassert that a title challenge will probably not happen this year. For United, there was a chance to go top with Chelsea playing at Swansea later in the day. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

Normal football interrupted the international break and Stoke visited Old Trafford to try to end a barren run of results in the red part of Manchester. United’s last game had seen them win confidently at Newcastle but many days had passed since then and plenty of players have been with their countries so while on paper this looked like a home-banker, things are never that simple. With Chelsea winning at Spurs in the early kick off the pressure was on United to get the win and keep the gap at just four points. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

United travelled down to the south coast to renew a rivalry with Southampton that has produced some epic battles over the years. Southampton were yet to win a game or register a point this season whilst United lost their opening away game at Everton. This time around there’d not be a grey kit in sight but United and Ferguson still had surprises in store.

Old Trafford hosted its first league game of the season as United played Fulham. The opening round of games had thrown up contrasting fortunes for the two teams with United losing at Everton and Fulham thumping Norwich 5-0. Once again Carrick would have to start at the back with Ferdinand, Evans, Jones and Smalling still out injured. Fans were treated to appearances by two United supporting Olympic champions – Usain Bolt pre-match and Greg Rutherford at half time.

Robin Van Persie signs for Manchester United

Robin Van Persie in his Arsenal days
Robin Van Persie has signed for Manchester United from Arsenal for a reported £22 million transfer fee (only £15m up front) subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed. One of the most eyebrow raising transfers of all time is now official, Van Persie is now a Manchester United player. Sir Alex Ferguson will see this as a massive triumph after seeing over challenges from Serie A champions Juventus and most importantly Manchester City. The Dutchman notched up thirty league goals last term and the prospect of lining up with Wayne Rooney should have most Reds licking their lips.
