We’re fast approaching the time of the year when the Academy kick-start their FA Youth Cup campaign. United’s record in the competition is unparalleled – 14 finals with 10 trophy wins. Having lost in the semi-finals to last year’s winners, Chelsea, with a young squad, expectations will once again be high this year. Burnley, who also reached the semi-finals last year, visit Old Trafford on Friday 7th December.

It goes without saying that United have a rich history of developing and playing home-produced youngsters in their teams. It is something that has become synonymous with the club from the time of the MUJACs through to Alex Ferguson today. Whilst fans are aware of such a culture, few know the stories and details about players, teams and records. That’s soon to change; Manchester United fans and youth football historians, Tony Park and Steve Hobin, have written a must-own book that’s soon to be released – Sons of United.

Whilst the first team battle on against (mainly) City (but also themselves) for yet more league success; the Reserves and the Academy have both been somewhat over-performing – depending on what your expectations for the season were. With March closing in it’s a chance for reflection on what has been and an opportunity to fantasise over what might happen in the last few months of the season.

Man United’s Academy begin their defence of the FA Youth Cup tonight at Moss Lane (7pm KO). They’ve been drawn to face Torquay’s U18 side – a stark contrast to last season when all their FAYC games were against academies of PL sides or strong Championship teams (Portsmouth and West Ham). United’s U18 side has a very different look this season, so what should we expect and who should we look out for?

657. The number of people who turned up at Moss Lane last night to watch the Under 18s, the Academy side beat Newcastle 1-0 in a dominant fashion that the scoreline doesn’t really suggest. Altrincham’s stadium isn’t half as hospitable as Old Trafford and you can feel the weather on a cold night, but this team deserve more support than that.
