George Best: A match going fan’s perspective

George Best

AUTHOR: – The Mancunian Red (Guest Blogger)

Probably the questions I most get asked – Did I watch George Best and who is my favourite player over the years. Many fans are surprised after hearing I watched Best over 100 times live and drool about his abilities that I then go with Robbo as my favourite ever red. George was my first hero, my first love if you like but my feelings towards him soured. I’m writing this article about Best because although thousands of articles have been written I personally do not feel they express my feelings as a fan or sum up the feelings of reds at the time he played and then in effect quit on us.

Paul Scholes

AUTHOR: – Doron

A testimonial for Scholes has always been pencilled in ever since question marks arose over his future a couple of months ago. However today it’s been announced that a Man United side will take on the New York Cosmos with Eric Cantona in the opposition dugout for Scholes’ final game on the hallowed Old Trafford turf.

The art of Scholes

Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes, as cliché imbues, spoke not with words, but with his feet. In a game too often rendered turgid by sloppiness and hoof-ball merchants, the shyster from Middleton reversed the trend, splaying balls far and wide with the ferocious precision of a sharking torpedo. He beautified and devastated, and – with recent news – saddened all who were enraptured by his 17 years of pure class. Distinctly un-English in style, the scale of loss born out of Scholes’ departure can be measured by the eulogies which followed. It evidenced, perhaps, the man as much as the player; unassuming, reserved. Zidane, one of the very few who edged past the standards set by the ginger-prince, marked him down as the greatest midfielder of his generation. He was – and still is – revered beyond adulation in Spain. Garnered respect has transcended beyond anything that rivalry can impede; in a week where F.I.F.A. continued to putrefy a game that is on its knees in too many places, those who ensure it can never die united to eulogise a small, ginger, asthmatic with a soft spot for lowly Oldham Athletic. Roy Keane, in a rarefied moment, spoke of an unaffected human. Alex Ferguson entitled his star pupil incredible. Scholes, almost reclusive in his introversion, would unquestionably grimace in return, but naked truth refuses concealment. Perhaps the greatest midfielder to have ever worn red, Bobby Charlton has more than once stated Scholes is his favourite player to have ever done so. It is Scholes’ character, he has said, and ability to churn out illimitable moments of beauty that marks him as a player he ‘loves’.

Scholes scores against Barcelona

AUTHOR: – Doron

There was almost a look of relief on his face when the final whistle was blasted on Saturday. It was the end of a truly wonderful career for Paul Scholes. There was no pompous fanfare and guard of honour, a simple wave to the crowd said it all. His 17th season as a first team squad player ended with his lowest goals return but his quality has still shone through. This though, is seemingly the right time for him to retire from the game that he loves.

Ashley Young

AUTHOR: – Doron

Ashley Young has been linked to Man United for over six months now. Indeed, even in previous seasons, the young English winger has been the subject of transfer speculation columns. Rumours of a January bid have never been confirmed or denied but recent murmurs suggest a deal is imminent. Today, word from the Man United doctors via Mr Mujac was that Young had undergone a medical last Friday. With that and speculation in mind, here are a few reasons why signing Young may make sense…

Owen Hargreaves

AUTHOR: – Doron

The somewhat inevitable news that Manchester United won’t be offering Owen Hargreaves a new contract has been announced by the Daily Mail. His four year stay at the club will come to an end when his contract expires next month and he’ll have to find a new club to try and resurrect his career.

A Squad For All Seasons?…

Posted on May 10, 2011  by Bricki  in Bricki, Man United, Players   7 Comments »

AUTHOR: – Bricki

Want to try and name your strongest XI from the squad this season? Not easy is it, now it all depends on the competition, time of year, opposition… the list could go on.

The great United teams of previous years have almost always had a first XI that usually picked itself. The likes of Keane, Scholes, Neville were always the names you saw on the team sheet when it mattered, now ten fans could pick ten different line ups and have legitimate arguments for it being our strongest team.

Ravel Morrison: when is enough… enough?

Posted on May 06, 2011  by nameonthetrophy  in Guest Writer, Man United, Players, Youth   14 Comments »

Ravel Morrison
AUTHOR: – Mr Mujac
Some years ago there was outrage, and rightly so when Roy Keane led a posse of Manchester United players towards referee Andy D’Urso and then proceeded to surround him for a perceived poor decision. The club and the players in question were rightly rebuked by both the press and the Football Association. Alex Ferguson publicly agreed that the players had gone too far, that they had a responsibility to themselves and the fans – that Manchester United are better than that.
