The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Dimitar Berbatov will be awarded a new contract by Manchester United. The Bulgarian struggled to settle in at Old Trafford during his first two seasons, but this campaign has seen him become one of the squad’s key players. Berbatov’s contract expires at the end of next season, and reports suggest his new deal will be a three-year extension worth £120,000 per week.

Even thinking of writing such a piece puts me in two minds. The finest right back in the country of his generation; a dedicated servant to the club who always give 100% for the shirt. Gary Neville is without question one of the finest servants in the clubs history so it is not without regret that I write this; but I believe Neville should retire so as to preserve the reputation that all his hard work through his career helped to create.
Contrary to belief it’s not solely his on the pitch regression (which is saddening more than frustrating, nobody will feel that more than Neville himself) that leads me to this opinion. Neville has long since been identified as the player other clubs love to hate; but his behaviour towards the club over the last 12 months is only serving to tarnish his reputation before he’s even left.

Sir Alex Ferguson once described a Paolo Maldini performance for AC Milan against Bayern Munich in the Champions League as “the perfect defensive performance” because the Italian “never once made a tackle”. To carry on the Maldini reference, in 2008, Ferguson said Rio Ferdinand could learn from him and play until he is 40.
That was before Ferdinand suffered a spate of injury problems; whether he will make it to 40 is one thing, but yesterday he completed 90 minutes for the third time in a week, which is pretty remarkable for someone with his recent record. And while it’s not quite true that he didn’t have to make a tackle, and while it could hardly be said that Ferdinand was a colossus at the back at West Brom, his performance was quietly outstanding.

On behalf of the Stretty Rant, I’d like to wish a very happy birthday to Jonny Evans. The centre back will celebrate his 23rd birthday today.

As the calendar year comes to an end, The Gaffer, Kyle, Yolkie and I sat round a log fire sipping mulled wine and eating leftover mince pies to share our best player, goal and match of 2010…
Stretford-End XI: Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Denis Irwin, George Best, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy
Subs: Edwin van der Sar, Patrice Evra, Jaap Stam, Sir Bobby Charlton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Denis Law, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Today is the final poll for the Stretford-End XI. To complete our 4-4-2 we of course need to select two strikers. As with the recent polls, there will be two votes per person. The striker candidates are Jack Rowley, Dennis Viollet, Denis Law, Mark Hughes, Eric Cantona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Wayne Rooney.
While this is the final poll, we will continue to accept votes until 24 December 00:00 GMT. You may vote for any of the position until then. The previous positions are Goalkeeper, Right Back, Left Back, Centre Backs, Centre Midfielders, and Wingers. If you haven’t voted for these positions yet, be sure to do so before the voting ends.

In the immediate aftermath of the Wayne Rooney fallout in October, I suggested the possibility of bringing back David Beckham in January for a variety of reasons. I’m the first to admit that the answers to some of the problems I suggested seem to have resolved themselves, so it was a great shock to see comments by the United legend today that intimated he wants to return to the club.

This is likely to be the most hotly contested position in our Stretford-End XI. Yesterday we launched our poll for two centre midfielders, and today our focus is on selecting two wingers. The contenders include two European Player of the Year winners, the longest-serving player in Manchester United history, and arguably the biggest name in football history. So without further ado, the choices for the two wingers are Joe Spence, George Best, Andrei Kanchelskis, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ryan Giggs.
