Ferdinand: City won’t win trophies

Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has been one of the best defenders in Europe over the past three years – a far cry from the criticism aimed at him for failing to turn upto a drugs test and his reluctancy to sign a new contract back in 2005.  However, Ferdinand has taken a swipe of Manchester City’s pursuit of Chelsea captain John Terry – questioning why the man who slipped and missed the crucial penalty in Moscow last season – would want to join a team that aren’t going to win any trophies?

Tevez signs for Manchester City

Posted on July 13, 2009  by Stretford-end  in Citeh, Man United, Man United News, Transfer Targets   6 Comments »

Carlos Tevez

Former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez has signed for Manchester City on a five year deal.  Tevez was left frustrated at playing second fiddle to Dimitar Berbatov and publicly criticised Sir Alex Ferguson for leaving him out of the starting lineup for the Champions League final – in which United lost 2-0 to Barcelona.  Tevez scored his last goal for United against Wigan Athletic – which helped United closer to the title in May.  He had scored the weekend previously – ironically against City – in which he proceed to cup his ears as he celebrated towards the Old Trafford management.  Tevez will wear the number 32 shirt as he did at West Ham United and Manchester United.

Tevez and Ronaldo

The 141st Manchester derby provided as comfortable an occasion as Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United troops could have hoped for at such a crucial stage of the season, as they returned to the top of the table.

The 2-0 victory, while petering out for the whole of the second half on the pitch, was achieved with goals by two players who appeared to throw their Old Trafford futures in doubt once again.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave the Champions the lead – Dimitar Berbatov was felled around 25 yards from goal, and the United number 7 continued his excellent recent form by drilling in the right hand corner of the goal.

Carlos Tevez then made two telling contributions – the first acting as somewhat of a forecast for the second, with his initial 20 yard effort smashing against the outside of the post, and then his second – after the sublime creation of Berbatov – found the inside of the post into the goal to seal the result. The much loved Argentinian’s response was to cup both ears in direction of the South Stand – evidently in the hope of a stronger attempt to sign him from Sir Alex,

The second half was almost a non-event save for a hysterical reaction by Ronaldo to being substituted – throwing an offered vest to the ground and then almost pathetically offering pouts to the cameras for a full 2 minutes.

The visitors only really threatened through a wild Robinho half chance and an effort that van der Sar magnificently saved, while United could have added another with a late flurry, most notably through Rafael who saw his effort saved.

What looked like one of United’s toughest remaining fixtures on paper didn’t turn out to be so in reality but the lethargy of the performance, particularly after Tevez’s goal and the reactions of both he and Ronaldo will probably have given Sir Alex an untimely – and ultimately, more prevalent – potential disharmonious headache in a crucial week for the club.

Match Report: Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United

Wayne Rooney‘s 100th career goal earned Manchester United a deserved win in the derby against Manchester City at Eastlands.

Rooney’s goal was one of the two major talking points in the game – Cristiano Ronaldo was bizarrely sent off by well respected referee Howard Webb.

Sir Alex Ferguson had, ironically, applauded the FA’s decision to appoint him in charge of the encounter, but Webb seemed to have a loose handle on the game – making several dubious booking decisions, starting with one for Rafael for throwing the ball “away” – the young Brazilian merely threw the ball back to the out coming City players. Both bookings for Ronaldo will leave the United boss scratching his head – the second for a handball after the Portuguese winger claimed he had heard a whistle. Whether he did or not was one thing, but the decision to send him off when he was not trying to earn any kind of advantage clearly incensed the United contingent.

Webb’s calls almost overshadowed what was a completely dominating performance by the champions, rewarded with Rooney’s goal in the 42nd minute. The excellent Carrick found space and shot across goal, Joe Hart could only parry, and Rooney had the easiest of finishes – but celebrated as though he had scored a 30 yard volley!

Carrick was superb in the middle of the park, dominating play and sliding in some superb balls for Rooney and Berbatov to chase after. His performance today indicated how much United missed the England man, who is maturing into a fine midfielder.

City fans would have expected their team to push on in the second half but it never materialised, even after the sending off of Ronaldo when there were more than 20 minutes to play.

The most action of the second period occurred in stoppage time – City had a corner, keeper Hart was up, it was haphazardly defended, Dunne swung a leg and van der Sar pulled off an astonishing save. From the clearance, Giggs carried the ball amid screams for him to shoot, he unselfishly fed Rooney who shot from 55 yards – Hart only just got back to deny Rooney a wonder goal.

Webb’s trigger happy notebook will deny United of the services of Evra and Ronaldo for the trip to White Hart Lane in two weeks – but the gloss of this fantastic derby win, and in particular the performances of Rooney, Carrick, Evra and Rafael, will probably be enough tonic for Sir Alex.

Player v.s club – where does the power lie nowadays?

Posted on October 06, 2008  by Stretford-end  in Arsenal, Chelsea, Citeh, Liverpool, Man United, Press, Transfer Targets   No Comments »

Top football magazine, FourFourTwo, have produced a quality article in their November edition that examines the player vs. club issue and where the power lies – you can’t miss the issue as it has Cantona’s face with graying beard on the front cover. We’re always reminded that ‘players wouldn’t get away with that in my day’ or ‘he’d get a clip round the ear and spend some times in the ressies’ when analysing the behaviour of some of today’s players – but does the power really lie with the player or do the clubs have more of say?

‘Well i’m pretty loyal i’ve only played for Bournemouth, Luton, Millwall, Palace, Birmingham Leicester….’

Ronaldo, Barry, Adebayor, Villa, Santi Cazorla, Lampard and Robinho are all featured in the article – which is interesting, considering that, of the players mentioned, only Robinho managed to move clubs on deadline day. Of course Tottenham would add Berbatov and Keane to that list, which would obviously flaw the point i’m trying to make – but out of the players mentioned only the Brazilian decided to jump ship and sign for Citeh on deadline day. Does this now mean that even with the Bosman ruling and the Webster ruling that clubs have the power?

‘Uri Geller would change the face of football forever’

Yes, we live in a football society where it seems for the top footballers, money is no object. Cristiano Ronaldo can easily command a mammoth £120,000 a week salary – which some people find amazing.

One person that wouldn’t find this extortionate (well maybe the sum for his day and age but in terms of ability being rewarded – he’d appreciate this) is former Red Billy Meredith, who in his day was the first footballing superstar. Meredith fought toothpick and nail to scrap the maximum wage that was forced upon footballers in those days – with the authorities labeling him greedy and a rebel. Meredith was in fact neither – just a player who wanted to be rewarded for his superior footballing talent. Why should he not be rewarded for training harder (in his own words) and being blessed with more naturally ability than the players of his time (not his own words)? In a sense I agree. Why should Ronaldo or Rooney be restricted in terms of how much they earn? Yes, they’ll be the argument that money then dictates where a player will end up. As we well know Ronaldo’s ‘childhood dream’ was to play at Real Madrid – so if there was a wage cap – I doubt he would still be at the club.

‘Meredith flies past Bolton’s very own Chucklebrothers’

The article reveals that ‘Ronaldo and Robinho were exactly the same, only Robinho had the bottle to force a move’. Although, according to everyone’s favourite spokesperson – Pele, Robinho was at at the end of his tether to leave Real Madrid after the way the Spanish Champions had used Robinho in open transfer negotiations of our number 7. Let’s not beat around the bush – Robinho would have signed for Union Niederkappel as long as he got out of Madrid. Citeh have a ton of money and as shown by a mediocre side in Chelsea – money can help you in your quest for silverware. I’m not saying that money is the only resource needed to challenge for honours – not at all, but it does help massively towards achiving that goal.

Would Chelsea had of signed Essien for £24Million? Or Drogba for roughly the same amount? No of course not – this leads again to the point that rich clubs hold the cards over the players – they do not always get their own way as the media sometimes make out.

Robinho (aided by Maradona for some reason):’I'm so pleased to sign for Chelsea..NO!..Arsenal…NO!…Milan….NO!..Wait a second..

Manchester United stood strong over Ronaldo in the summer – a testament to the manager – who would not be bullied into submission; like there was any other outcome. This story has been discussed to death – but the importance of the fact that Fergie kept Madrid at bay, highlights that players don’t always get their own way. Ronaldo could have, if he’d have done a Robinho, ruined his reputation entirely – without getting any reward.

Its a bit different over at Arsenal and Chelsea where it looks like there was a share of power over the summer. Both Adebayor and Lampard flirted with the idea of moving away from their clubs and both were rewarded with handsome contracts. In this case are all parties happy? Well, nearly all expect for Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Gareth Barry’s situation aswell showed how much power the clubs have. Liverpool felt that Barry would go to them for a knock down fee due to unsettling the player but O’Neill stood strong and gave the attitude: ‘He can leave – for this price’. Obviously Benitez didn’t fancy forking out the £18Million for the ex-Villa captain and thus left it be.

‘Barry tried to hide his desire to leave for as long as possible’

I’m sure i’m due some criticism in brining up transfer rumours that everyone is sick of from the summer. The important thing though to remember is that although it is the clubs that, well in most cases over the summer, hold the cards – the players are deeply concerned by their reputation which is ultimately created and destroyed by the fans. We help to create heroes and unmask villains dependent on how they leave the club and in what circumstances they conduct themselves afterwards.

Are they welcomed back to the club with open arms, old songs chanting around the ground OR do they endure the barrage of abuse that will ultimately come their way? Ronaldo was very smart in not handing in a transfer request as he knew that his reputation could be destroyed in a matter of days. Robinho on the other hand was always classified as a talented player but was not a first team regular for Real Madrid in his time he spent with club. No doubt talented, the fee paid by Citeh for him was astonishing and faced the fact that every player has their price and that clubs do hold the cards; well nearly all clubs.

‘So Daniel, where do you stand on who holds the power?’

Sven = Striker stalker

Posted on January 21, 2008  by Stretford-end  in Citeh   No Comments »

What is it when a striker comes on the market, the continental “genius” that is Sven-Goran Eriksson is constantly linked to him. I’m not surprised hearing that Citeh fans are over the moon when apparently the fallen hero Adriano is on his way to Eastlands. Fast forward a few months when a tragedy stricken Adriano is back home in his native Brazil ‘trying to find himself again’, Citeh are still being linked to every striker that comes on the market. This time it is Bayern marksman, Lukas Podolski, who has fallen down the Bayern pecking order (behind Klose and Luca Toni). He has been made available for loan by the German league leaders with Citeh in pole position to capture the signature of the former Cologne superstar. This is the same striker who put in a number of impressive performances in the last World Cup and earned his big money move to the German giants. He should feel at home with Citeh, after all, they’re a massive club.

On his way to Citeh….apparently.
