Manchester United 3-0 West Ham United: Match Report

August 28, 2010

Ryan Giggs
Manchester United comfortably overcame a West Ham side who have now lost three of their opening matches, their worst start to a League season since 1977. Wayne Rooney, Luis Nani and Dimitar Berbatov completed the scoring – with United’s football breathtaking at times. If truth be told, United will face sterner challenges in the season ahead, but credit should be given for the way in which the players moved the ball once the West Ham players tired from their early pressing and high energy levels. The victory puts United in third place, level on points with Arsenal in second and Chelsea leading the table.

Rooney

West Ham have been tricky opponents for United in the past, but rarely at Old Trafford. Under new manager, Avram Grant, they will be looking to buck a trend that has seen them defeated on each of their past three visits. Manchester United will feel they have a point to prove on many levels – three points quickly became one point at Fulham last week whilst rivals Chelsea have already racked up a goal difference of +12 after just two games.

Rooney

Wayne Rooney scored twice and Michael Owen came off the bench to net another as Champions Manchester United strolled past West Ham at Old Trafford. It was a poor game of football to mark the 100th anniversary of the Theatre of Dreams but Rooney did at least do his best to illuminate the fixture.

Darron Gibson scores

It was a battle between two injury ravaged United’s at Upton Park as both sides’ concerns grew with more names to add to the wounded list, but in terms of the football, there was only one team in it – four goals, each beautifully constructed in their own way, scored by Manchester United.

There were the expected changes after the Carling Cup win over Spurs but Darron Gibson clearly did enough to keep his place in the team – however, the opening exchanges hinted that West Ham would give United a run for their money. Giggs misplaced a pass that Hines collected – his cross shot across the face of goal was almost converted by Collison who was snuffed out by the backtracking Giggs – this early chance was really the closest the Hammers came to notching a goal in the first half.

West Ham Preview – 5 memorable Upton Park clashes

December 4, 2009

Clashes betweeen the United’s of Manchester and West Ham have a reputation for being feisty – whether it was ill blood from the Ince sale or the fact that the East Londoners have more than once thrown spanners in the works of various trophy pushes. A memorable solo goal from Ryan Giggs was enough to move Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League.

United had been temporarily replaced at the summit by great rivals Liverpool but where ‘Pools victory at Pompey was gifted to them, a moment of true quality was required to give the Red Devils victory at Upton Park.

There was little to brighten up a dull first half however as both teams struggled to make any kind of creative breakthrough, with a Ronaldo stab at a Scholes wayward drive the closest a goal came for either side.

With West Ham employing Behrami to double up with Neill on Ronaldo options appeared to be limited regarding the creativity of the away side, but on the hour mark, a move involving United’s two most experienced players provided the breakthrough.

Paul Scholes crossfield pass was controlled by Giggs, who skipped past two challenges in the box and scored with his right foot from 15 yards. Though perhaps harsh on West Ham, the home side did not pose a serious threat to Edwin van der Sar‘s clean sheet record from there on despite plenty of effort – a landmark, coincidentally, that stretched to surpass the British league’s record following this 13th consecutive shut out.

Giggs’ goal was a worthy match winner for United whose next league game is the remaining game in hand against Fulham on Wednesday week.

Manchester United 2-0 West Ham United

Manchester United 2-0 West Ham United

Champions Manchester United cantered to a 2-0 win over West Ham thanks to a first half Cristiano Ronaldo double.

The set of events, which seemed eerily similar to last season, saw United race into an early 2-0 lead with the Portguese wizard scoring both, then taking their foot off the gas. Brazilian Anderson was at the heart of both of moves – first, playing to Nani whose cross was sidefooted in by Ronaldo, then, passing to Berbatov, who performed an exquisite piece of skill (the kind of which he was bought for) to beat the defender on the byline before playing in for Ronaldo to tap in.

More could and arguably should have been added to the scoreline – impressive performances were there to be seen all over the pitch, from the ever improving Rafael, to the restored confidence of Ferdinand, through to the growing and understated composure of Fletcher, the commandeering midfield run of Anderson and the improving in Nani. In the number 17, in particular, a massive change seems to have taken place in recent times and performances, and his display against the Hammers was one of his best in a Red Devils shirt.

Berbatov combined with Tevez in the second half, with the Argentinian following in the Bulgarian’s footsteps by outrageously flicking the ball round his marker, but a horde of defenders muscled him out when he closed in on goal.

Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney were brought on with 20 minutes to go and Rooney was typically all action but perhaps not so typically all for goal (though perhaps understandably, given he was chasing his 100th career goal) – firing in 3 shots from distance within 6 minutes of introduction, though his as ever superb work rate compensated for what some would call his greed.

Ratings : Kuszczak 6, Rafael 7, Ferdinand 7, Vidic 7, Evra 7, Ronaldo 8, Fletcher 8, Anderson 8, *Nani 8, Tevez 7, Berbatov 7.
