Manchester United 4-0 AC Milan Match Report

March 10, 2010

Wayne Rooney scores

Relentless, ruthless, Rooney – these were the three R’s that inspired Manchester United to a historic victory over grand European opponents AC Milan. It was a classic action packed European night at Old Trafford with many subplots; but it was United who triumphed with a massive 7-2 aggregate scoreline to progress to the Champions League quarter finals.

How does Rafael deal with Ronaldinho?

Ronaldinho

After the 3-2 victory over AC Milan three weeks ago in the San Siro, Rafael came under some fierce criticism for his naive performance against Ronaldinho. The 2004 & 2005 World player of the year gave our young right back a big lesson, which will no doubt be of valuable experience to the lad as he develops even further. Firstly, my personal opinion was that Rafael did ok, although I believe he was at fault for not thumping the ball down the pitch just before Seedorf scored Milan’s second. However, as we approach kick off time, I wanted to look at the positions of both fullbacks in the previous game and their potential roles tonight.

Paul Scholes lucky goal against Milan – remember Porto?

February 18, 2010

Paul Scholes

One thing that winds me up is the old ‘lucky Man United’ tag that gets labeled at any fortuitous event that surrounds the club. Whether it be a refereeing decision or a scuffed shot that hits a pigeon and rolls in past the keeper – United are generally perceived as a side that have the Gods looking down on them. It amazes me that tag has been around for about eighteen/twenty years – its interesting the Gods have stayed around for so long! So to Paul Scholes’ superb ’shinner’ against Milan on Tuesday night – big fat piece of luck? Or what goes around comes around?

Darren Fletcher inspires Manchester United win in Milan

February 17, 2010

Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher continues to prove that he is a man for the big occasion. Fletcher set up Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes in the San Siro on Tuesday night to give United a 3-2 lead going into the second leg. Fletcher was inspiration against Arsenal in the two semi final games last season and was the unsung hero in the 7-1 thrashing of Roma back in 2007. It is quite clear how important Fletcher is to this Manchester United, both from an defensive side and creative side (Fletcher has eight assists so far this season).

Sir Alex Ferguson has mixed feelings on result

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for his Manchester United side coming back from a goal down to beat the seven times European Champions 3-2 on their own turf. However, Ferguson was disappointed that United conceded a late back-heeled goal by Clarence Seedorf, the same Seedorf who scored the second goal in the San Siro three years ago to send United crashing out of Europe.

AC Milan 2-3 Manchester United Match Report

February 16, 2010

Rooney scores

In an enthralling Champions League second round first leg tie, Wayne Rooney added to his ever growing reputation with a fantastic double in the San Siro to give United a great advantage going into the second leg. AC Milan and Manchester United is one of the great traditional European nights and this occasion had plenty of that old romantic feel with each side boasting a collection of modern day legends, stars of tomorrow and plenty of hard work, but if one word could sum up the opening period, it would be fortune.

Ferguson: Its a good time to play AC Milan

February 14, 2010

Alexandre Pato
Sir Alex Ferguson believes that it is a good time for Manchester United to play AC Milan, considering the seven times European Champions have lost their starlet, Kaka, to Real Madrid and have had to go through a number of changes since Paulo Maldini and Carlo Ancelotti left the club in May. United last played the Rossoneri in May 2007 and lost 5-3 on aggregate. Milan went onto to lift their seventh crown in Athens, whilst United won a sixteenth domestic title.

After the battering by Fulham in December made it 5 league defeats in the season, Manchester United have responded by dragging themselves back into contention with 6 wins out of 7 in the league to set up a massive eleven days in the clubs season – three away games against in-form, top class opposition will undoubtedly prompt Sir Alex to use the 4-3-3 formation. In doing so, we’ll find out more about the future of Anderson. Should Fergie swallow his pride if it is in the clubs best interests short term?

United draw Milan and Beckham comes home

December 18, 2009

David Beckham

Manchester United have been drawn against AC Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League, who are currently sitting in second place in Serie A.  United haven’t had the best record against AC Milan over the years in the European Cup – winning three out of the eight games played and losing the remaining five.  United and Milan have history in the competition and the first clash occured post Munich in the spring of 1958.  United beat the Rossoneri 2-1 at Old Trafford but were outclassed in the San Siro in the second leg, losing 4-0 in the process.  The game will also see the potential return of former United midfielder David Beckham – who left the club for Real Madrid back in 2003.

Defeat hailed better than victory – ask the British press

December 10, 2009

89

It’s been quite a week – if anyone had told you back in May that in December you would be celebrating a Michael Owen hat-trick in Germany for the club and that Sir Alex Ferguson would describe the possibility of playing Michael Carrick at centre back against Villa as “good news” you would have either carted them off to the loony bin or checked their pockets for a copy of  Grays Sports Almanac.
