Euro Trips.. Barcelona 1994

August 24, 2010

Nou Camp

The Champions League draw is this coming Thursday. To whet the appetite, Yolkie talked to Dan Burdett, a supporter who has been all over Europe following United for more than 15 years and now attends most trips abroad alongside his wife Kim (whose excellent account on Moscow we published last month). Read on for our first edition of “Euro Trips”, first stop, “Barcelona, 1994”.

Manchester United 2008 European Cup: Reliving Moscow

July 23, 2010

Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand lift cup

With essentially meaningless games getting us with sweaty palms it’s sometimes easy to forget the end goal, what it’s all about. We’re getting excited over a silly dance from our reserve winger scoring a goal against an American team; but there is a definite chasm of emotion that exists between that and the pinnacle of the game. As a prelude to a new feature we have for the new season on Stretford-End.com, I read an amazing account of our 2008 victory in Moscow, which I am proud to say I can share with the Stretford-End.com community here.

Manchester United News: Season Review 2009/10

May 16, 2010

JI-Sung Park

So there we have it, not since the 1-0 victory over Manchester City back in May 2007 have United not finished Champions of England. Since then United have gone onto lift the Premier League title three times and were on course for a record fourth victory. Sadly, Chelsea thumped Wigan 8-0 on the final day of the season, leaving the record eighteen times winners a point off the top. Credit to Chelsea who have scored a mountain of goals in a crazy season. Here we take a look back at the season just gone and thoughts on performances, matches and what the future holds.

Reviewing the Sun’s review of our Euro trips

May 12, 2010

Stretford-End.com reviews the Sun newspaper’s account of Manchester United’s European performances this season. Having taken the time to log all of the paper’s match ratings, it seems appropriate having now finished the season that we have a look back and see how well our progress was deemed by the tabloid media.

Bayern Munich analysis, post mortem & reaction

April 10, 2010

Wayne Rooney

Every now and again you get a defeat that is so demoralising you just don’t know what to say – which is why i’ve taken so long to blog about our exit on away goals to Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Like in 1993, 1998 and 2002 United have exited the competition without losing the overall tie and generally outclassing the opposition for the first 45 minutes. I hope to examine the overall performance from both legs, mistakes made and where this leaves us for the rest of the season.

Manchester United 3-2 Bayern Munich Match Report

April 8, 2010

Robben Scores
Trophy aspirations for the Premier League Champions Manchester United are in tatters after their limp exit on away goals in the Champions League Quarter Finals against Bayern Munich. Arjen Robben scored the Germans second goal – and more importantly, the second away goal – in a second half that saw the team that have made consecutive finals comfortably eliminated.

Reaction to Bayern Munich defeat

April 2, 2010

Bayern score late on

Sometimes you get so fed up after a defeat, you just prefer to leave things the way they are rather the dwell on the shambles that you witnessed. I should have probably vented my feelings on the performance a little earlier, rather than on the eve of our biggest Premier League game of the season, however I honestly feel that we will get a result at home on Wednesday night – although we will have to play a lot better to get anything out of the game. The performance was lackluster, flat and we were generally second best to Bayern all game. We operated far too deep with Van Bommel loving the acres of space he could gallop into. Both Neville and Evra were at fault for the goals and were generally poor all evening. Patrice Evra has been one of our best performers all season, however he did have an off night, which I know he will bounce back from next week.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Manchester United Match Report

March 31, 2010

Ribery scores for Bayern Munich
What started as a dream ended in a nightmare as incidents involving Wayne Rooney influenced the infant stage, the current stage and threaten to influence the future stage of this Champions League Quarter Final. The England striker scored his 34th goal of the season to hand Manchester United an advantage in the Allianz Arena before he deflected Franck Ribery’s free kick in and was trod on in the build up to Bayern Munich scoring an injury time goal to give the Germans a solid advantage heading into the second leg.

Champions League: Bayern Munich vs. Manchester United preview

March 30, 2010

Tonight, Manchester United face Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League Quarter Final – despite the media billing it as a chance for the Germans to get revenge for their final defeat of 1999, they already have that after knocking United out in 2001. The two teams played each other again the following season in the group stages, with two draws. The game tonight will be a totally different game with barely any survivors from that trio of ties. Stretford-End.com gives a brief analysis and preview of what to expect.

Manchester United Champions League draw – Live

March 19, 2010

Manchester United 2008 European Cup

We’ve won three European cups in 68, 99 and 2008 and reached the final last season. Today we find out who we will play in the Quarter finals and the 2010 Champions League begins to take shape. Barcelona favourites with the bookies, having brushed aside German side Stuttgart in the week, whilst Lyon will still be bouncing having knocked nine times European Champions Real Madrid out on their own turf. We have every reason to be confident that we can make it three finals in three years after the impressive display against Milan both home and away. So in the build up to the draw, which will be done live on the blog, we ask you – who do you want to face in the next round?
