Lammens Wins Over Manchester United Faithful
Senne Lammens needed only one match to win the affection of Manchester United supporters, though the coaching staff had already been convinced by his professionalism in training. The Belgian goalkeeper joined on deadline day after a turbulent summer of speculation, a move that saw André Onana depart on loan to Trabzonspor. Despite this, Altay Bayindir initially retained his starting role, with Lammens confined to the bench.
That changed on Saturday when Ruben Amorim handed the 23-year-old his debut in a must-win clash against Sunderland. Lammens rewarded his manager’s faith with an assured performance, keeping a clean sheet and displaying composure beyond his years. His poise quickly caught the attention of fans in the Stretford End, who jokingly likened him to club legend Peter Schmeichel.
According to Centre Devils journalist Sully, Amorim and his coaching staff had already been impressed by Lammens’ work ethic. Reports from Carrington described him as “calm and mature,” with a professionalism that has earned the respect of everyone at the club. He has stayed late after training sessions to focus on fitness and distribution, determined to elevate his game. Having clearly outshone Bayindir, Lammens is now expected to remain United’s first-choice goalkeeper. While it is early days, his confident debut has supporters hopeful that he might finally bring stability to a position that has long caused United problems.
Antony’s Near Move to Liverpool
Antony has disclosed that before signing for Manchester United in 2022, he was on the brink of joining Liverpool. At the time, the Brazilian winger was attracting widespread attention for his performances at Ajax, with both Premier League rivals battling for his signature. Ultimately, United met Ajax’s £82 million asking price, reuniting him with former manager Erik ten Hag.
Just months later, Liverpool instead secured Cody Gakpo, another United target. Antony’s time at Old Trafford, however, proved underwhelming. Across two and a half seasons under Ten Hag and Amorim, he made 96 appearances, contributing just 12 goals and five assists before being loaned to Real Betis in early 2025. The move to Spain revitalised his form, prompting United to arrange a permanent transfer worth around £21.6 million.
Reflecting on the missed Liverpool switch, Antony told ESPN Brazil that he had been “very close” to signing for the Merseyside club but felt his time at Manchester United still brought “great moments” and ultimately proved “a good choice.” For Liverpool, missing out now looks fortunate, while United’s costly gamble stands as a cautionary tale against extravagant fees for unproven talent.
