Greenwood Agree Deal With Marseille

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to a transfer deal with Olympique de Marseille for Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old, currently on loan at Getafe, has been the center of intense speculation recently. Earlier this week, Lazio withdrew their interest in Greenwood, with Marseille emerging as the leading contender for the forward. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Marseille and United have reached an agreement for Greenwood’s transfer, pending the player’s approval. Ornstein reports that the deal involves Marseille paying United €31.6 million (£26.7 million), with €27.6 million (£23.3 million) as a fixed fee and €4 million (£3.4 million) in add-ons, along with a significant sell-on percentage.Ben Jacobs provided additional details on X, stating that United not only have a 50% sell-on clause but also retain the right to purchase additional percentages in the future. This flexible agreement demonstrates United’s innovative approach to maximising the value of their assets. But it looks like this deal could bring greater ramifications to the south of France.

The Mayor Of Marseille Is Not Happy

Because of Greenwood arrest in January 2022 when he was accused of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, the mayor of Marseille Benoit Payan strongly opposes the player’s expected move to the Ligue 1 side. Payan condemned Greenwood’s alleged charges as “unspeakable and unacceptable,” asserting that he does not want his club “shamed by someone who hits his wife.” Greenwood has not featured for United since January 2022, following his arrest. Although these charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, United completed their internal investigation and decided he would not play for the club again. Last season, Greenwood was loaned to La Liga side Getafe, where he was warmly received. He scored 10 goals in Spain and was voted Getafe’s Player of the Season.

It remains to be seen whether this will have a greater impact on the potential deal or the club will not care much about what the city mayor thinks of Greenwood. In any case, United are looking to offload the controversial figure and get the best possible deal from Marseille. For now, the French giants are looking like they are very close to striking the deal.

What Could Have Been – Wesley Sneijder

In other news, Wesley Sneijder revealed in an interview for TalkSPORT that he had the chance to join Manchester United when he was at the peak of his powers. The Dutchman, who won the treble with Jose Mourinho’s Inter back in 2010 and reached the World Cup final the same year with the Netherlands, says he had the opportunity to come to Old Trafford and play under Sir Alex Ferguson. It is no secret Sir Alex wanted Sneijder at the club, but the former player has now blamed his then-representative for the deal never materialising. He said “my agent screwed up a little”, also adding that he had another chance to come to Premier League. The other club in question were Liverpool, but Sneijder said he chose to go to Galatasaray, because “Liverpool was then not the Liverpool that it is nowadays”.
