Ratcliffe’s Vision for Old Trafford: A 90,000-Seat Icon
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is laying out ambitious plans to redevelop Old Trafford, aiming to transform it into a 90,000-seat stadium over the next five years. With INEOS set to finalise its 25% ownership of Manchester United, the blueprint for the stadium’s expansion is already taking shape, according to Mail Sport. Though a relocation from Old Trafford has been ruled out, Ratcliffe envisions a new, modernised “Stretford End,” surpassing Tottenham’s 17,500-seat kop. Alongside this, the redevelopment could see the inclusion of a five-star hotel and United-themed attractions, turning the stadium into a comprehensive entertainment hub. The renovation is anticipated to cost upwards of £2 billion, with construction expected to begin within the next five years, extending the area around Old Trafford and linking it to Media City.
Ratcliffe’s vision is to make Old Trafford the “Wembley of the North,” a stadium fit for grand events. Discussions are reportedly underway with local politicians, including Trafford Council representatives and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, to involve the government in these ambitious plans. However, securing public funding might prove difficult as most publicly funded stadiums serve multiple purposes or form part of larger sporting event bids. The proposed redevelopment would create a sports, entertainment, and community village around Old Trafford, boosting the local economy and generating employment opportunities. Manchester United supporters have responded positively to Ratcliffe’s plans, with fans backing the INEOS-led regime as they seek to revitalise both the club and its iconic home.
United Quietly Working on Michael Olise Deal
Manchester United are reportedly working behind the scenes to secure the signing of Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise. According to journalist Alex Crook, the club is negotiating a deal for the talented 22-year-old in what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window for the Red Devils. United, who made no signings in January due to financial constraints and Financial Fair Play considerations, are now looking to strengthen key areas of the squad, with the right-wing position a priority. Alejandro Garnacho remains their best option on that flank, as both Antony and Jadon Sancho have struggled to deliver consistent performances. Olise has emerged as a top target, with Manchester City and Chelsea also expressing interest in the young Frenchman. However, United are reportedly moving swiftly to conclude negotiations, keen to beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.
Speaking to @MUFCMPB on X (formerly known as Twitter), Crook shared the latest updates, suggesting United are “actively” pushing to get the deal done. “I think Manchester United will be working on this deal behind the scenes. Man City and Chelsea have shown interest, so I think United will try to get that deal done early if they can,” he said. Olise’s arrival would bring much-needed quality to the right side of United’s attack, while his status as a homegrown player further aligns with INEOS’s vision for the future.
