Here is everything you need to know ahead of Manchester United’s final European match of the year, as they host Bayern Munich.
Team News
Most of Manchester United’s injured stars won’t be returning anytime soon. Mason Mount (calf), Casemiro (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Lisandro Martínez (foot), Christian Eriksen (knee), and Amad Diallo (knee) are all set to miss out, despite Diallo’s recent return to training. Victor Lindelof faces a late fitness test after picking up a knock, while Jadon Sancho remains sidelined due to his ongoing exclusion from the squad. Marcus Rashford, returning from a European suspension, and Anthony Martial are both battling illness.
Following a woeful weekend showing, Erik ten Hag is expected to ring the changes, with Rasmus Højlund, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kobbie Mainoo, and possibly Raphael Varane eyeing starts.
For Bayern, their humbling defeat in Frankfurt left Serge Gnabry sidelined with a significant strain after just five minutes. He joins Matthijs de Ligt (knee), Sven Ulreich (ankle), and Gabriel Marusic (knee) on the treatment table. However, Jamal Musiala is set to step in, and Thomas Müller may feature as Bayern look to rotate after securing top spot.
Form Guide
It is never easy to look at Man United’s recent results, because as soon as they start making some progress, the next match they spoil it all yet again. After that famous 4-3 loss in Copenhagen, United did get important wins against Luton and Everton, but then drew 3-3 in Istanbul and lost in Newcastle. Then Ten Hag surprised everyone with a 2-1 win against an odd Chelsea side, but just three days later not only did they fail in getting two consecutive wins, they lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. It is no wonder there are not so many people thinking United could get a result against Bayern in a must-win match.
As for the Bavarians, they lost 5-1 to Eintracht in Frankfurt last weekend and it is tough to explain just how unexpected that result was for everyone. Prior to that, they drew 0-0 against Copenhagen, which did not really hurt them following their four previous wins. While Bayern did have some unexpected results this season, such as the 2-1 loss to lower-league side Saarbrucken in the German Cup, they still put eight goals past Darmstadt and seven past Bochum. There is so much firepower when things click and it will be up to United to stop that from happening.
