So, that was some week from Manchester United. After beating Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City led by both Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, the Devils are preparing for their Europa League match on Thursday, when it will be decided against AZ Alkmaar which of the two sides will top the group and have a potentially easier draw.
Alongside that one, there will be another five matches for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side between now and the end of 2019. This means the January transfer window is getting closer and despite putting some good results against strong sides, the club should not fool themselves. That is why we have made the list of four players Man United could go and try to sign this January.
Donny van de Beek
It should be noted that none of this signings would be easy to make. Donny van de Beek is one of the players Man United have been linked with in recent days, but Real Madrid are the ones also being interested. However, if the Spanish giants do not make a real move soon, Man United should exploit the idea of signing him.
His Ajax disappointed in the Champions League this season, getting knocked out in the group stages after losing to Valencia. Maybe that could be a chance to make a move and take the most of that situation. He could feel that there is need for making some changes and moving away from Ajax, after a couple of really successful years for the young Dutchman.
Central midfield is something that need reinforcements and Van De Beek’s intelligence and energy could offer much.
On the other hand, there is Nikola Milenkovic, a centre-back we have been mentioning here for some time now. It was also last season that we said United should try and see how realistic it is to bring him to Old Trafford and after a poor start of the season for his Fiorentina, maybe now is the right time.
The reason for that is that Viola have gone a bit under the radar, with Milenkovic included, but he is still immensely talented defender and we know what happens when United sign Serbian centre-backs. He is tall, intelligent and good on the ball, but also has a good reading of the game. Maybe this time the asking price for him would be lower than it was a year ago, following his strong World Cup performances at the age of 21.
And another central midfielder for the end. Houssem Aouar plays for Olympique Lyonnais and plays quite well. He is a player that would bring quality to Man United’s midfield department and the good thing is that Lyon’s start of the season was a poor one. That might accelerate things and give Lyon the chance to earn some money on this transfer.
With Lyon progressing in the Champions League that will be a tough task, but then, the Devils should at the very least continue following him in the second half of the season before making their minds on the Frenchman.
