Should Manchester United Go After Edin Dzeko?

Manchester United have been linked with a lot of players in recent times. Mario Mandzukic was one of the forwards linked with a move to Old Trafford, especially during the last summer transfer window. When that did not materialize, the rumours continued after the window closed, but now the Croatia international’s chances of joining United are not so great.

But now another name is being thrown around. According to various reports across Europe, Manchester United are seriously considering signing Edin Dzeko in the January transfer window. AS Roma forward is being linked with a return to Premier League, but should United actually go for him?

Let’s see.

The Rumour

Man United are lacking in striking options ever since departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez. Many media outlets are claiming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has realized that and that he really wants to sign a new forward in this transfer window. Edin Dzeko is now one of the prime candidates, as youthfulness of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial needs a little bit of experience.

The Situation

The situation is quite simple. Edin Dzeko has a contract until June 2022, which would not make him an easy option from that point of view, but one other fact might help solve that. Dzeko is 33 years old and he will turn 34 in March 2020.

That means that Roma would be more open towards selling rather than if he was five years younger with a contract running for two and a half years. This could be Roma’s last chance to earn some money on his transfer. Dzeko will only continue getting older and his contract will only continue getting closer to its end.

How Is Edin Dzeko Doing These Days?

Edin Dzeko is doing well this season, but the last campaign was not a great one. He scored just nine Serie A goals in 33 matches, whilst adding five in the Champions League. He also contributed 11 assists in all competitions, which helps his cause a bit.

The year before that, in 2017-18, Dzeko was doing better, with 16 Serie A goals and eight in the Champions League. But the 2016-17 was completely magnificent for anyone’s standards. Dzeko scored 39 goals in all competitions, including the 29 in Serie A.

Should Man United Sign Him?

But since then, Dzeko has been on a downward spiral. And that is not that big of a surprise. He is getting older and older and AS Roma are not the most stable team. One year, they will be firing from all cylinders, then the next one will be a real pain attacking-wise. Also, Dzeko is not the striker he used to be, but the most realistic fact is that he remained a very underrated forward throughout his career.

But our decision is – no. Man United should not sign former Manchester City striker who will be 34 before the season ends and who has been clearly slowing down in his attacking output for some time now. Edin Dzeko has had an amazing career, but Man United should definitely look elsewhere.

  1. Maybe, they should acquire Jovic, or even better yet, Mitrovic – they are both ultimate talents, proven all around Europe?
