After that Monday night game against Arsenal, it is slowly time for us to start thinking about the next challenges. And that is AZ Alkmaar, the Dutch team Man United will face on Thursday night. The Devils went to the Netherlands in a need of three points, not only to secure staying top of the group, but also because of their really poor form in the past month.
Who Will Play Against AZ Alkmaar?
Exactly 21 players are in the squad for the match against AZ Alkmaar, with 18 of them set to be in the matchday squad. Here is the full list of players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could play against the Dutch side>
David De Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Axel Tuanzebe, Marcos Rojo, Brandon Williams; Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Fred, James Garner, Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Angel Gomes, Daniel James; Tahith Chong, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood.
Right from the off, it is obvious Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are the most important players that will not participate and they will be truly missed. It would not be a surprise if we Solskjaer mix it up once again, with players like Greenwood and Gomes as possible starters.
What To Expect From Them?
AZ Alkmaar drew their first match in Europa League 2-2 against Partizan in Belgrade. That game showed exactly what we could expect from the match on Thursday. AZ are a typical Eredivisie side that likes to play football and do it with style and that could be a nice chance for Man United.
Their match in Serbia felt like they were a bit lucky to get a point. AZ got the opener, but Partizan then scored twice to overturn it and also had an extra man, when AZ got a red card. But Partizan were not careful enough with their high line and a counter attack cost them dearly, with AZ scoring to salvage an important point.
Man United will definitely have their chances away from home, with AZ probably eager to try and play out of the back or just be proactive more than reactive. That is when United are the best, which we have seen against Chelsea. If they take those chances, then a victory will be near. Alkmaar’s centre-back partnership is their weakest link and the Devils should try and exploit that.
Four Signings In The Next Year?
A recent report from Manchester Evening News suggested that Manchester United are looking into the possibility of bringing in four new signings during the next two transfer windows. That report was one of the most talked about in the media this Wednesday and M.E.N. claim that Man United are looking into getting a full-back, a midfielder and two forwards to improve their squad, with their attacking frailties being a particular worry right now.
Whether that is true or not, it is interesting to see a report like this. This would mean that United would not hurry to change a lot of things at once, which would be in line with how they operated this summer. It will be interesting to see if exactly this will be the way things will go down in the next 10 months.
