After taking a short break from season ending player reviews, we return to them again and this time we will have two players under the microscope. The reason for that is that neither of them played a lot of last season, one even being away on loan and not featuring for Man United at all. Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Antonio Valencia come in next and the two players will offer an interesting contrast.
Appearances across all competitions
Timothy Fosu-Mensah: Timothy had spent his season on loan at Fulham, being one of their numerous transfers. Incidentally or not, he was performing at the similar level as those other signings did – not great. Fulham signed a bunch of players, five of them came just on the deadline day of the transfer window and it was no wonder Slavisa Jokanovic could not prepare them as well as he wanted.
Fosu-Mensah did not get much playing time across the loan, with just 12 Premier League matches and one appearance in League Cup, amounting to a total of 884 minutes on the pitch. That is not great for a player that was loaned out trying to get some playing time. At 21, Fosu-Mensah needs the playing time and Fulham obviously did not turn out to be a great choice.
Antonio Valencia: On the other hand, Valencia was one of the oldest Man United players last season and his levels were now way below what was necessary for this team. His presence in the dressing room was probably felt, but on the pitch he played just occasionally. Six Premier League and three Champions League matches were all he got last season, going to a total of 718 minutes of play.
Did he perform above or below the expectations?
Timothy Fosu-Mensah: It is fair to say Fulham fans expected more of him when he arrived, but Man United fans will be disappointed that he did not get the regular playing time. Even when he played, he was not doing great, as the whole Fulham team was terrible throughout the season. Maybe there was not much that was expected of Fosu-Mensah last season, but this loan should have been a better one for his development.
Antonio Valencia: His season was probably somewhere in the middle. No one expected Valencia to play much or make a great difference and that is exactly what happened.
Will he be a part of Manchester United during the 2019-20 season?
Timothy Fosu-Mensah: It is expected that Fosu-Mensah will be fighting for his place in Man United squad during pre-season. He will try and prove to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he can be an interesting backup option Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but also the centre-backs. If not, Fosu-Mensah will be going out on another loan.
Antonio Valencia: No, he will not be part of Manchester United during the 2019-20 season. After a decade at the club, after joining in 2009 from Wigan, Valencia has left the club as a free agent and he decided to move to his Ecuador and one of the best clubs in the country, LDU Quito.
