Manchester United’s lack of activity on the pitch due to the international break can result in one thing, and one thing only: a constant activity in the rumour mill. Considering The Red Devils won’t play until next week, and with the transfer window fast approaching, more and more players are getting linked with a potential move to Old Trafford.

With that in mind, we will take a look at some of the rumours surrounding arrivals to United. Most of them are defence-related, but apparently the club are considering moves on both ends of the pitch.

Diego Godin

We start with someone who is widely considered to be one of the best centre-backs in the world: Diego Godin. The Uruguay star won’t play with La Celeste during the international break due to injury. However, everybody knows what he could bring to the table. Godin is a world-class central defender, and Manchester United could certainly use someone like him.Well, according to the Daily Star, there could be talks between both parties and United are confident of reaching a deal.

The paper says that United chief executive Ed Woodward has “held several rounds of talks with Atletico Madrid over a deal for the Uruguay star”. And things go as far as Woodward feeling “confident” of landing him. Godin would cost £20m, but would certainly prove an upgrade on what United already have. On the downside, however, he is 32. Experience is useful, but how longer can he play at the top level? There are several experts who believe United should go youngter at the position. And that leads us to…

Kalidou Koulibaly

Jose Mourinho continues to search for the best alternative to bolster the defensive line. And while Godin certainly fits the mold, his age could be an issue. After all, he would only be able to play at the top level for one or two more years. That wouldn’t be an issue with someone like Kalidou Koulibaly, though.

The Napoli star leads Mourinho’s target list ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Daily Record, but acquiring him won’t be easy. First of all, the Senegal international recently signed a deal with the Partenopei side. And since he is 27, Koulibaly is entering his best years. Not to mention he already knows how to perform at the top level. Undoubtedly, United must be willing to spend if they want to acquire the towering defender. But Koulibaly can become an excellent addition to the team. He has all the traits needed to thrive at the Premier League level.

Everton Soares

Manchester United are not only watching alternatives for defence, since they have also set their sights on wing depth. One possibility that has emerged in the coming days is making a move for Gremio star Everton Soares. The Brazilian forward has been one of the best players for the Brazilian outfit during the 2018 season. His versatility is a plus as well, since he can play on the left or through the middle.

Several top sides are looking at Everton, though, and United are monitoring him ahead of a £30m potential move, sources have told ESPN FC. In fact, he recently made his debut with the NT and has all the makings to become a regular name on the squad for the foreseeable future. Can The Red Devils win the race for one of the most talented, up-and-coming Brazilian players?
