According to various reports and reputable British media, Manchester United are ready to back Jose Mourinho in January transfer window with a some rumoured to be upward of £100m. The Guardian write that Mourinho’s wishes would be a centre-back and a centre-forward that would help the team improve after a horrific start to the season.

Man United still sit in eighth place, are out of Carabao Cup and never seem to be able to solidify themselves over longer periods. If the reports are truthful, then that could be a big help for this Man United side that seems weak in many areas of the pitch. Here are some players the club should look at, depending on what they would want from those players.

Milan Skriniar – Immediate Step Up

Milan Skriniar is 23 and plays at centre-back for Inter Milan. The Slovakian has been very good at Sampdoria and joined Inter in 2017. Ever since moving to Milan, he has been exceptional and is one of the most consistent players under a more rigid manager that Luciano Spaletti is. He is tactically very aware and that is something Mourinho needs.

Nikola Milenkovic – Building For The Future

We wrote about Nikola Milenkovic recently and still – there is something about this guy. Everything he does for Fiorentina and Serbia seems to indicate he will make a great career. He is tall and physically imposing, intelligent and reads the game superbly. At Fiorentina this season, he is playing as right-back, which is not natural to him, but he is nevertheless doing well. At 21, Man United would need to be patient with him in the beginning, but he has the potential to become a Man United player.

Jose Callejon – Short-Term Fix

This is a bit of a wild card. Man United definitely need a right winger and what better than a player with which Mourinho could work immediately. Jose Callejon, though, is 31 and plays for Napoli. Getting him in January would be a hell of a task, but if Napoli finish third in their Champions League group behind Liverpool and PSG, then why not? His contract ends in June 2020, too and Man United could hope to get two very good years, until someone new joins the club to succeed Callejon. He is Mourinho’s type of player, too.

Mauro Icardi – All In

Okay, this is the REAL wild card. But hear me out. Manchester United want to make a statement. They want a proper striker. And Mauro Icardi would fit both those columns. Icardi would be really expensive, but he is 25, proven quality ready to become a world class star, is a proper predator Man United need and also that could offer Man United a real chance to move Lukaku on the right wing, a place they also need to solve and the Belgian could actually fix it. Makes sense…

Maxi Gomez – Old School Forward

One of the players that is hard not to like. Maxi Gomez is Uruguayan forward who plays for Celta. He is just 22, but looks more mature than that. And he is not a Spanish type of striker, he is a typical old school forward. Strong and tough to defend against, can be a threat both on the ground and in the air. Though, he would need to some polishing, but in the beginning he could be Lukaku’s competition, especially in the first six months.
