Some people feel like Group C is actually the one that could be called Group of Death at this World Cup, but right now that is hard to see. France scrapped past Australia to win 2-1 with the help of Paul Pogba, while Peru narrowly lost to Denmark in their first match at the greatest stage since 1982. The match between two sides could prove decisive for the shape of the standings – if France win and Denmark get past Australia, it will be the two European sides who will progress to the round of 16.

France

France were not great in their opening match against Socceroos. They expectedly played in a 4-3-3 formation, with Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann up front. The midfield of Pogba, Kante and Tolisso did next to nothing in open play, failing to create much. If anything, the three of them combined made just one key pass throughout the match, and that one came from Manchester United’s star. However, France were unlucky to concede the goal, as Mile Jedinak converted the penalty which was naively made by Samuel Umtiti. Apart from that, Autralia did not really make too much trouble to this side, it was mostly France being unable to make the most out of their potential they clearly possess. Peru will be a more dangerous opposition, but that could also give more space to Didier Deschamps team who will be expected to start in a 4-2-3-1 this time around.

Team News

France will be in full strength for this match and Deschamps will be able to choose his 11 from all 23 players.

Peru

Peru’s first match at the World Cup after 36 years was not that bad. Yes, they lost to a dull Denmark side, but they truly put up a fight. The South American team had 17 shots in total and six of them were on target. They were create chance after chance, but still could not get past the brilliant Kasper Schmeichel. Their vibrant 4-2-3-1 posed a lot of questions for Denmark, as Andre Carillo did plenty of work on the right wing, creating four chances for his team-mates. Peru will be expected to try and hurt France on the counter-attack and if they leave too much space, the pacey front three of the French side could punish them with ease. Peruvians will have to adjust their style for this clash, but Deschamps’ boys should have enough about them to win once again and all but confirm themselves in the knockout rounds.

Team News

Peru are in full strength, as well as France are.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Peru made 13 of their 17 shots from the inside of the box and also had a penalty, but still could not get past Schmeichel
  • Thomas Lemar signed for Atletico Madrid couple of days before this match and he might be specially motivated to do well if given chance
  • Antoine Griezmann seemed to be in the mood against Australia, making five shots throughout the match

Conclusion

France should win this one. They might concede a goal against feisty Peru, but they should also be backed to score more than one. In the end, that leaves with France winning in a match with at least three goals in total.

Verdict: France win and over 2,5 goals – yes
