Manchester United will not stop considering alternatives on the transfer market until the window officially shuts. This means several players will likely be linked with a potential move to Old Trafford even if it’s far from actually happening.
The latest reports indicate that The Red Devils would be considering a move for a former Barcelona defender who is now playing at Borussia Dortmund. We are talking about Marc Bartra.
According to a report from the Metro, Bartra could become the next player to wear United’s colours. Jose Mourinho loves the versatility of the 27-year-old, and believes he could become one of the best centre-backs in the world sooner than later. The transfer could (potentially) speed up because Dortmund do no want the player anymore. In fact, the Bundesliga side gave Bartra permission to find another club. That says a lot regarding how much playing time he will receive if the stays with his current club.
Does the team need any more defenders?
If we look at things from a business stand point, adding Bartra definitively makes sense. He is used to play in big teams, has featured in the Champions League, is entering his prime years, and could be had for a cheaper fee since Dortmund are decided to let him go.
But one question should arise here in case United are serious about acquiring the Spaniard. Does Manchester United really need ANOTHER defender in the current squad? Eric Bailly is injured, but there are other alternatives to take his place. Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones are playing at centre-back. If we consider Bartra as a capable right-back as well, then he would have competition from Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian. Daley Blind can also operate on both roles, so the depth is there.
If we put those things into context, maybe the team do not needs another defender. But having too much assets is never a bad thing. After all, Darmian and Blind will likely leave the team soon. The same could be said about Lindelof unless he starts playing better.
This is all just speculation and in the end, no one knows. Maybe not even Bartra knows where he will play next. But if he is available and willing to come, there is nothing wrong with adding yet another player to the squad. After all, a strong depth could end up being United’s biggest weapon ni the second half of the season.
