Neville
No match for United this weekend, but still plenty of news. Gary Neville is expected to announce his retirement, Dimitar Berbatov wants to end his career at Old Trafford, and Danny Welbeck may be used to bring Jordan Henderson to Old Trafford.

Gary Neville set to announce retirement – Daily Mail

Former captain Gary Neville is expected to announce his retirement at the end of the season. The 35-year-old defender has only made three first-team appearances this season and is unlikely to be offered a new deal. Neville has played for the club his entire career amassing 601 appearances, but it seems the time has come to call it quits. United fans have been aware the end of an era was growing near, and Neville’s retirement would signal the beginning of the end for the club’s old guard. His appearances have become limited in recent seasons, but no one will forget what Neville has done for this club. It will be a very sad day when he decides to hang up his boots.

Agent: Berba wants United stay – Sky Sports

Dimitar Berbatov’s agent – Emil Danchev – claims the Bulgarian hopes to stay at Old Trafford for the remainder of his career. Berbatov’s contract expires at the end of next season, and he’ll have to hope performances like his five-goal thriller against Blackburn will earn him a new deal. I’ve been a fan of Berbatov since his Tottenham days and I was thrilled the day he signed for United, so for me this is good news. The 29-year-old striker is finally starting to prove his worth, scoring 11 goals already this season, but there are concerns over consistency. Prior to his five-goal performance against Blackburn, Berbatov had gone two months without a goal. There is no doubting his ability and class, but goals are also needed on a regular basis. Some would choose to cash in on the striker now, but I’d certainly welcome a longer stay.

Welbeck holds key to Henderson swoop – Manchester Evening News

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly considering a swap deal involving Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. Welbeck is currently on loan at Sunderland and manager Steve Bruce has made it clear he would like to make the move permanent. After recently admitting a deal was unlikely, there is new hope for Bruce with United targeting Henderson. United may offer to swap Welbeck as part of a deal for Henderson, or could offer a 12-month extension of Welbeck’s current loan deal. I’d hate to lose Welbeck, especially after his recent performances for Sunderland. Ideally we would be able to have both, but that may not be a possibility. I believe Henderson could be a good signing, but not at the cost of Welbeck.

  1. with the likes of rooney, berbatov, machada, owen, hernandez etc in the squad, would welbeck be happy coming back to sit on the bench after playing every game for sunderland ? Henderson will be staying at sunderland for at least another 12 months to help his development, as he won’t develop much sitting on uniteds bench ! I think welbeck will rejoin sunderland on another seasons loan……..and henderson will stay at his home town club for the forseeable.

  2. @ Peter Lee

Welbeck is much better positioned to succeed than Macheda or Owen and would form a formidable 4 striker squad with Rooney, Berbatov and Hernandez. Let’s be honest Macheda just isn’t good enough while Owen will be let go at the end of this season.
