The trend of slow press activity after a match continues. Beside Manchester United’s impressive 7-1 victory against the Airtricity League XI at the new Aviva Stadium, the only news seems to be Cleverly’s loan to Wigan.
United close out preseason with victory in Ireland – The Guardian
The World Cup players made their return in style as United finished their preseason with a stunning 7-1 win. Some may considered the Community Shield on Sunday to be another preseason friendly, but I’ve always viewed it as a competitive match. Playing the opening match at the new Aviva Stadium, United turned on the style as they welcomed back a combination of World Cup stars along with recently-recovered Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia. What was most impressive about this match wasn’t the scoreline, but the fact that United managed it without Rooney scoring a goal. Whether it was a high-level opponent or not, it’s good to see goals being contributed from all over the pitch. We were much too reliant on Rooney last season and others will have to chip in this season if we’re to be successful. Park opened the scoring after a terrible defensive lapse before Owen made it 2-0 heading into halftime. Chicharito continued to impress by scoring 90 seconds after he was subbed on and winning a late penalty which Nani scored. Jonny Evans scored his debut goal for United and Park doubled in his tally in the second half. Antonio Valencia put in a man of the match performance on his 25th birthday as created multiple goals and even scored one himself. Momentum should certainly be behind United as they head to Wembley this Sunday to take on Chelsea.
Cleverly to join Wigan on loan – The Daily Mail
This certainly comes as quite a surprise. Only 24 hours ago it seemed Cleverly was destined for a loan move to Bolton, but The Daily Mail is now reporting that he’s joined Wigan for the season. Not a bad move; I’m sure he’ll get lots of valuable playing time at Wigan. Although, I’m not sure this is the best news for us right now. With Hargreaves and Anderson both sidelined with long-term injuries and Carrick limping off last night our numbers in the center of midfield are slim. Unless Sir Alex has a signing up his sleeve, Cleverly may have been valuable this season.

For a team with 397 central midfielders we seem to be running short of ones to choose from as the season gets nearer. 😛
“Tony O’Valencia” easily MOTM but even more noteworthy was that he actually touched the ball with his left foot and managed to score with it!
