Derby County inflicted an embarrassing defeat on Manchester United in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final.

Derby started brightly and got the goal their first half exertions deserved when Kris Commons struck superbly from the edge of the area to give the Rams the advantage after 30 minutes.

Any Red Devils supporters hoping that would prove the kick up the backside the European and World Champions needed were barking up the wrong tree – a less than convincing response saw them head into the interval looking toothless, and the second half was arguably even worse.

Sir Alex Ferguson has noted recently his concern at the amount of chances his side have been missing – far more alarming for him would have been the complete lack of creativity anywhere on the pitch, and perhaps more alarming still, the displays of Paul Scholes and John O’Shea.

Chances for United were few and far between and even after the introduction of Ronaldo, Rooney and Carrick, little was forthcoming, though Ronaldo did fashion the best two chances for the visitors.

Credit should not be taken away for Championship strugglers Derby who fully deserved their win – on this performance, County are full value for a final peformance, certainly showing that the second leg will be no foregone conclusion – and Sir Alex will be praying that this humiliation does not have a lasting effect, or a combined effect with the lack of domestic goals of late from his side going into Sunday’s game with Chelsea.

Ticket prices go up, don’t worry though, the Glazers’ are getting richer!

It is nearly four years since I was outside the Prince of Wales pub in Cardiff having a couple of beers waiting for our FA Cup final with Arsenal. The result was disappointing that day considering the fact that we totally dominated the play but couldn’t find the back of the net, with Ruud VanNistelrooy being the biggest culprit – however there were more important issues afoot. Manchester United had been bought by Malcom Glazer the week previous against a barrage of protests – which I witnessed for myself at the Prince of Wales.

I won’t go into all the details about the protests and the anti-Glazer feeling as it has been well documented but I would like to let you all know that despite ticket prices going up and up, the Glazer are in the top 10 years rich list published by FourFourTwo magazine. Other fans may be envious of our success in recent seasons, however this has absolutely nothing to do with the Glazer family, who are simply getting rich off the back of United’s success. Yes, football is far too commercial these days and players and clubs are further away from the people that made this game great in the first place – the fans. Will be blogging soon about Jimmy Murphy after reading ‘Strange Kind of Glory’ recently, which may touch upon this issue further.

Below are the top ten:

1. Shekh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nayan (Manchester City) £15bn
2. Lakshmi Mittal & family (QPR) £12.5bn
3. Roman Abramovich (Chelsea) £7bn
4. Joe Lewis (Tottenham Hotspur) £2.5bn
5. Bernie & Slavica Ecclestone (QPR) £2.4bn
6. Stanley Kroenke (Arsenal) £2.245bn
7. Alisher Usmanov (Arsenal) £1.5bn
8= Lord Grantchester & The Moores Family (Everton) £1.2bn
8= Dermot Desmond (Celtic) £1.2bn
10= Lord Ashcroft (Watford) £1.1bn
10= Malcolm Glazer & family (Manchester United) £1.1bn

You can read the full richest men in football list at the FourFourTwo website. Would like to hear your comments on this matter – should we forget this as we’re winning trophies and having a great time or do we need to remember what is important in football and what made Manchester United great in the first place – which has nothing to do with what the Glazer family stand for.

Match Report: Southampton 0-3 Manchester United

Southampton 0-3 Manchester United

A Danny Welbeck header, a Nani penalty and a first senior goal for Darron Gibson gave Manchester United the reward of a fourth round tie against Tottenham after a routine dismissal of the threat of Southampton.

The Saints felt they had cause to be aggreived as Welbeck’s opener appeared to be offside, and then a sending off for their forward Paterson for a lunge on Vidic incensed the bench.

In truth United were slightly fortunate to be awarded youngster Welbecks goal as half of his body seemed offside as he, but Matty Paterson’s challenge was truly reckless and with both feet leaving the ground referee Riley had little option but to dismiss the youngster.

The Red Devils continued to dominate the tie and doubled their lead with a penalty – once again, the home crowd and manager were incensed as McGoldrick was harshly punished for handball – but once again, it was probably inexperience that caused the wrong decision from the Saints player.

Nani coolly put away the penalty and almost scored again shortly after, a spectacular bicycle kick hitting the post, before Anderson went close with a long range drive.

Sir Alex introduced Wayne Rooney to try and spark some urgency into United’s performance even though the tie was comfortably won – and Rooney did just that, coming close on a couple of occasions before brilliantly finding space and setting up fellow substitute Gibson for his first goal in United colours.

United head into a similar cup tie (albeit the first leg of a semi final) on Wednesday against Derby before the massive clash against Chelsea in the league next Sunday.
