Derby County inflicted an embarrassing defeat on Manchester United in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final.

Derby started brightly and got the goal their first half exertions deserved when Kris Commons struck superbly from the edge of the area to give the Rams the advantage after 30 minutes.

Any Red Devils supporters hoping that would prove the kick up the backside the European and World Champions needed were barking up the wrong tree – a less than convincing response saw them head into the interval looking toothless, and the second half was arguably even worse.

Sir Alex Ferguson has noted recently his concern at the amount of chances his side have been missing – far more alarming for him would have been the complete lack of creativity anywhere on the pitch, and perhaps more alarming still, the displays of Paul Scholes and John O’Shea.

Chances for United were few and far between and even after the introduction of Ronaldo, Rooney and Carrick, little was forthcoming, though Ronaldo did fashion the best two chances for the visitors.

Credit should not be taken away for Championship strugglers Derby who fully deserved their win – on this performance, County are full value for a final peformance, certainly showing that the second leg will be no foregone conclusion – and Sir Alex will be praying that this humiliation does not have a lasting effect, or a combined effect with the lack of domestic goals of late from his side going into Sunday’s game with Chelsea.
