But what you have missed from Busby is that we were a virtual nothing club until he took over and he turned us in to the glamour club and loved throughout Britain for attractive football. And who knows what might have happened had not Munich happened.

And Busby didn’t have much spending money compared to the United managers after he retired and had created the mighty United.

Regarding him “moving upstairs”, I’ve read a couple of things where he said he’ll just make a clean break from the game once he leaves and let someone new come in and do his own thing. I too think that would be best as it will be hard enough for someone to step into Fergie’s shoes without having his shadow hanging over him too.

You raise an interesting point regarding the qualities that Fergie shared with Busby – the importance placed on youth, and local youth. Of course there can be success without these policies as many other clubs have shown but much as we can almost define what a “Manchester United player” is, could the same ring true for managers?
